While spending some time at FFZ yesterday, caught this rare visitor's arrival. Too bad he approached from the backlit west side, leaving me only with these shots of him taxiing to Tango One's ramp.
The fate of C-54 N99AS
Was she a crop duster / sprayer with those tanks?
James, I believe all three C-54s at Falcon were outfitted with spray gear. One of them still had the overwing spray apparatus thingies attached.
"thingies"????
hey I thought thingies was a good way to describe them and I was told that this particullar plane and I think one other or so I was told was used for spraying Budworm ,which I guess is some sorta worm or something ,lol
Ok, got it. the thingie-bob sprays whatemcallit useing the thingies on the wormies so they won't eat the do-hickies ???

Here's another 1978 aerial. Don't you wish you had a time machine?
All that classic sheet metal that we're probably drinking sodas out of now... :'(
I doubt that B-17 on the left was scrapped cause werent they snatched up as warbirds?
-Wow on second look I see 5 B-17's
I think the B-17 toward the left side might be Sentimental Journey. This is what it looked like back then. There's a B-25 near the left side center of the photo too. Also, there are at least five Connies visible.
@ Chris: We do have "Time Machines" .. They're called Cameras! :D
What I also find interesting: There are actually six aircraft in the photo engaged in fllying!
- Three in the runup area
- One Landing
- One just off the active
- One taxiing to the runup area
Local pattern-beater that I caught while waiting for an old T-34A to show up. Wish my shots of the T-34 came out this good.

Nice Katana...
So, where are the T-34 shots? ;D
Right here. First one too early, second one too late. The in-betweenies were all motion-blurry. The aircraft flew behind a tree on approach and I was a bit wobbly when I reacquired it.
Edit: Actually, I like the first one quite a bit now that I look at it. Any why the hell does the halo from "shadows/highlights" not show up as prominently in Photoshop as it does in the finished & posted image?
I might almost say "Too Late" / "Too Early" :D
Little sooner (and maybe a hair tighter) on 1 and you'd see the pilot .. Little later on 2 and you'd see the pilot and have a nice rear 3/4 shot...
The first one feels a bit off-balance due to the left wing sticking out into space, but it is what it is. I would have loved a more solid head-on shot, but even at 500mm, I just didn't have the reach to take a credible stab at it. Rear-quarter shots have to be extra-special to float my boat, and this one is a bit ho-hum.

Looks like the Instructor in the Katana is trying to keep the student from seeing (worrying about?) the Vans...
If I had one of these, I would never fly it without these three items - a tuxedo, a vodka martini, and a silenced Walther PPK. Bonus if the passenger is an impossibly-beautiful woman who is actually an assassin hired to kill me. Actually, that's pretty close to how my wife and I met.

Has anyone been able to catch Jens Meyerhoffs F8F-1 Bearcat? I hear that he's been flying it quite often.
I live two minutes away and I haven't seen it. I did hear something with a big ploppy recip engine on Monday, but I just assumed it was the CAF's SNJ. Word is that he's planning on making some of the Coolidge Fly-Ins this winter. Looking forward to that.
Any idea what the current status of Ho-Hun is? I saw her fly at Falcon about six months ago, but haven't seen her since.

Light Meter in that guys hand?
I don't think so. Maybe some decibel-meter or something? Had two guys on the ground - one in front of the aircraft, the other to port. They both had these little handheld devices that they would hold up high and look at while facing away from the aircraft. The aircraft would hover for a minute or two, land, then these two guys would run toward it and help the co-pilot unload what looked like sandbags from the rear compartment, they'd close it up, the two ground dudes would re-man their posts, and the whole sequence would start over. They were obviously trying to measure something at different weight levels, but I have no idea what. Regardless, it was nice to catch something different.
The helicopter is owned by Air Methods, which is the largest medical helicopter operator in the country. It has an Experimental classification (as marked), so they must use it exclusively for testing.

So what are the best places to spot from at Falcon? I've done all of my flight training out of falcon and am quite familiar with the field itself, but I can't seem to think of any decent vantage points off the top of my head.
I'm at FFZ on a weekly basis (non-photographic purposes), so I'll be giving it a go sometime soon.

Looks like Jay and whoever else is attending this weekend's air-to-air workshop had a hell of a flight this evening. In addition to SJ, they shot Cripes a' Mighty, Stang, and that Jurca Spitfire. The elusive Bearcat departed shortly before everyone, no idea if it was part of the flight as well. Can't wait to see your shots, Jay.
Nice view of our departure.
No Bearcat for us... :(
Many pics to follow. Great first day. Shooting some GA subjects on day 2.
Any idea what time you guys are wheels-up tomorrow?
Brief at 0630-ish, crank at 0700-ish, wheels up at 0730-ish.
We're not on as hard a time schedule with the GA subjects on Sunday.
Awesome. Might be able to catch this departure as well.

Was this from the big "no info" event held on the 16th?
Indeed it was. Turned out being a Chamber of Commerce event with local businesses displaying whatever they make/sell/do at booths, and local restaurants providing free food.
Aircraft displayed outside were hit-or-miss. Stang was right under a big set of halogen work lights, totally unshootable. Even if you didn't get the lights in the shot, you'd get a ton of light-bleed and hazy-rays in the image. The B-25 well-lit from the rear, but the front half was totally shadowed, so no matter how you exposed a shot, it looked goofy. The Bobcat, C-47, SNJ, and the B-17 (from a handful of angles) were all placed nicely for long-exposure shots. The Apache was unshootable as well. The ramp was really crowded early on, but the crowds thinned out after an hour or so and you could get good 30-second exposures without people walking through.

Driving home from work, I noticed one of the C-54s on the CAF ramp with a crane near it. I heard a sound that I thought was a generator of some sort, but it was actually one of the engines.

Not sure how I feel about this one. I tried to get the fuselage darker so it's not all hazy, but couldn't do it without making all or part of the sun look blotchy and fake. Also not too happy about the lens flare on the main gear and underside of the fuselage. Anyone know a good method of removing them?
Try planing around with the levels. In photoshop you can slide the black triangle on the histogram to set the black point. This should make it silhouette easily. The gray triangle in the middle sets the middle grays. In lightroom the levels tab has four sliders that serve similar functions. The levels might help with the lens flare, if not try using the burn tools. Photoshop has options to burn lights, mid tones, or shadows. This is the quickest thing that might help off the top of my head.
Thanks Chris - that's actually precisely what I did. I slid the black triangle right to about 13 or 14. If I went to 15 or higher, the "rings" around the edge of the sun became very pronounced. You can make them out in this shot, but the further right I went, the silhouette got darker, but those rings just started looking worse and worse. I used the select tool to highlight just the aircraft, but no matter how I adjusted the edges of it, there always seemed to be some "fringing" of the sunlight at the edges - VERY ugly.
You could probably fix at least some of the green flare on the tires by copying .. flipping .. pasting a portion of the other landing gear and then leaving that patch on its own layer while you...
...get in close with a very soft brush and gently clone away the flare that's in the sky. Having the tire fix on a layer of its own would allow you to work behind the fixed tires until the sky was cleaned up. Then you can flatten or not as you desire.

Nice Bearcat Joe. Local bird?
Brief series of events - I missed SJ landing, this Cessna had to do a go around because SJ was still on the runway, I ran across the street to get in position for a head on, some yahoo driving Bill Oz's truck drives by and honks at me, the Cessna comes back around, I got this shot, some guy in a car at the stoplight nearby yells "MAN, THAT'S GONNA BE AN AWESOME SHOT!" And yes Vance, that Bearcat is local.

I've been after a shot like this for well over year. Yesterday evening finally yielded the right combination of clouds, sun position, an inbound aircraft, and both of my kids being asleep for me to give it a shot. Took a lot of work to get decent detail, color, and light on the PC-12 while retaining sufficient detail in the background, and while there are still a few things I can gripe about, I'm pleased with the result.
(http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6191/6142803584_e7ece022d3_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/24526864@N03/6142803584/)
Now that really is a cool shot, awesome shot, nice shot, great shot!
Congrats on getting it all to work out.
Really awesome shot, Joe, congrats on finally getting it!
Thanks guys! Bonus is that it's one of my favorite FFZ regulars - a PC-12 that used to belong to Harrison Ford.
@Joe - It doesn't get much better than that. Great image all the way around.
I was truly inspired by Joe's recent image of the PC-12 on final into Falcon. The great monsoon thunder-heads blossoming in the background really made for a special photograph. As I was leaving my office around 4:15 this afternoon, I noticed a similar situation east of Falcon and was aware that SubAir's Beech 1900 was inbound at 4:42 PM. Crossing my fingers, I went home quickly and grabbed a camera/lens to see if I could get lucky.
Unfortunately, the good light was quickly swallowed-up by a huge thunderstorm encroaching from the west. All I got was a stinker dark "blah" sky as the 1900 zoomed over-head. I need to be more dedicated if I hope hope to capture an image as tremendous as Joe's. Either way, I like that 1900. It does not screw around on arrival. Compared to the student pilots doing T&G's, the 1900 lands like the space shuttle - all business.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
Jeff, poopy skies indeed, but you did a lot of things right - not often that one gets that much prop blur while still being able to count rivets. I played it super-safe on the PC-12 shot and was cranked all the way up to 1/320, as I saw the conditions were pretty close to what I had been after and I didn't want to blow the shot by going for too much blur. Also, the wider aperture it yielded meant I had very little to clone out in terms of dust spots.
Honestly, the biggest thing that allowed me to get that shot was not having anything going on at home at that moment. The kids were asleep, Jonna was napping, and I didn't have anything that needed to get done around the house at that very moment. Ever since the monsoons started, I've watched flight tracks on Flightaware and looked to the east to see the clouds I wanted where I needed them, but for whatever reason, I couldn't make the two-minute drive out to Falcon Field to get the shot. Frustrating sometimes to be that close and not get the shot, but a man's got to do what a man's got to do.
Joe,
Powerful shot! Those clouds look like you could stand on them.

This afternoon a US Army C-23C Sherpa arrived at Falcon. The pilot said they had come from Springfield MO. In looking at the profile of this bird, it makes me wonder if the fine boys in Belfast were trying to achieve some type of tribute to the potato.

Thanks Joe. I wish I had the courage to lay on the asphalt like you to get that great low angle - well done. I still am marveling at the narrow width of the Sherpa's wings. Obviously, they work great; however, they remind me of a wing you'd find on a Cessna 182 - not a large plane like the C-23. Oh well, what do I know ;D

You never know. The s/n on the Falcon visitor is 93-1328. It is written right below the pilots left-side window (not the tail). Not that it is a big deal; however, I'm wondering if you could crop-in and read it on your image?

Caught one of Boeing's Block III test birds out there this morning. Kind of a cool flight profile - would take off, hover, then fly sideways along the length of the taxiway, then fly forward back to the starting point, then repeat it a few times. This worked out good for me, as it meant that most of the aircraft was well-lit, instead of back-lit.

Joe,
Congratulations on the October Photo of the Month. A very cool shot indeed!

Not strictly a photo taken at Falcon Field but we did take off from there. I guess that counts. Another shot of OV-10G BuNo 155492 taken on a test flight over Roosevelt Lake during April of 2005. The odd bright area at the lower right edge of the canopy was aluminum tape holding on wiring for propeller instrumentation.
Here's OV-10A 67-14670 just after a test flight in August of 2006. Now flying with the FAC (Colombia).
Hey Scott - Excellent set of images!!! Great to see the Bronco in action!
This shot was taken at a memorial for Larry Newman in January at Falcon. Larry was best known for his balloon flights across the Atlantic and Pacific. I worked for Larry's ultralight company, American Aerolights, during 1982-83.
Nikon D3s and 70-200mm f.2.8 VRII with 1.4x teleconverter.
Gorgeous shot, Scott. Sounds like January was a busy month for memorial flights at Falcon.
N533PC has been very kind to me in terms of good shooting opportunities.

New Pet Airways bird - Short SD3-60. Saw this guy on FA and left my office a couple of minutes early to try and catch his arrival/departure. Turns out it is the new Pet Airways ride. I don't know if it is a permanent replacement of the Beech 1900's that have previously flown in/out of Falcon; however, it was a nice change of pace. Light was tricky as the setting sun was dodging in and out of the clouds. I got very lucky on his final into 22L, but lost all those golden rays to a large storm cloud moving across the west valley. Accordingly, I got bupkis on the departure.

Phenomenal shot, Jeff.
You must have just left before I got there. They flipped runways, so I went out toward Higley. Had he departed quickly like the Pet Airways flights normally do, I would (hopefully) gotten a chance for a silhouette departure shot with the dark red sunset clouds in the background. There was lightning in that direction as well, but I doubt I would have caught anything. Anyway, he took his sweet time getting out of there, the light situation stopped favoring the shot I was after, and they flipped runways again. Saw him depart on my way home, he rotated past the mid-point and had a rather shallow climb out, so keep that in mind for future visits. I suspected it was a Pet flight when I saw it originated at Hawthorne. Timing is right for it too. Let's see what Friday morning brings.
Thanks Joe. I must have just passed you on Greenfield when I bailed from the CAF lot. When that storm cloud blocked out the sun, I lost all hope. I probably should have been more patient and waited a little longer to see what changes might occur. Oh well; there is always another day.

Not much really... Mostly strong contrast.
The only real slight of hand was to add a "Brighter" gradient from the bottom edge to just under the wings to bring the runway chevrons out a little more. I also cloned out some poles on the treeline. The dark "smudge" just above the trees at camera right was actually there. Not sure what's causing it through all the heat haze but it's not as a result of cloning.

Power/Telephone lines. Looks like the jet exhaust smeared them together. Sometimes I clone 'em out, sometimes I leave 'em.

In 1967 much of the original WWII RAF buildings (see area where park is now located) were still intact - although in various states of disrepair. The officers swimming pool in the center of the park area became Mesa's 2nd public pool and it is where I took formal swimming lessons as a youngster - my time spent goofing around in SRP's canals did not count with my mother. In my early teenage years, my best friend and I would ride our bikes to Falcon on Saturdays, hangout at the old RAF tower building (between the two hangers), and beg pilots for rides. You'd be surprised how many times we got to go flying with some stranger. I still beg for free rides; however, it rarely if ever works today ;D

Hey Chris,
I have seen that Mustang. It used to be a Cleveland Air Races contender, if not winner.
I last saw it way back around 2000 +/- 3 years.
I rode in the owners T-6 up to Sedona, for an Air-to-Air shoot. But since I was in the subject T-6, I just got shots of the camera plane Mooney, and the awesome Sedona backdrop.
At the time, I was told the Mustang had just received a complete restoration, but hadn't been flown much as the owner couldn't afford the $25,000 a year insurance bill. He was working a few angles to arrange that to be paid. Interesting the plane is still there.
I haven't talked to the owner for many years.
I've seen it in company with STANG both at Falcon and Deer Valley. Seems to show up in a lot of AZAP Photos.

It's a shame it's just sitting there, but I'll bet the insurance to fly it is a lot more now than it was then. I wonder why he doesn't sell it. Mustangs are worth a pretty penny these days.

Yet another Border Patrol MD-type on the ramp at Flight Trails. These CBP guys seem to ride their birds pretty hard, like, literally into the ground.
Wow. There's actually a video of the incident in which the helo pictured above was damaged: http://youtu.be/jUVwFItH0I0.
Expensive mistake!
They were probably doing auto-rotation practice and mis-judged the altitude.
That video is from October, 2009. Did the wreckage just show up at Falcon?
Here's an interesting article about the accident.

The BP has retired all of the 600's to AMARG.
It arrived maybe two weeks back. I picked the right day to shoot it, as they moved it the next afternoon. There are two MD500 hulks in their yard, I know at least one is a hard-landing victim as well. The other one is in similar shape (messed-up struts, crumple damage), so I'm assuming it met its end similarly.

^^^^ Superior image Chris. You've really upped the quality of your photography in the past few months. Very well done sir.
One very minor critique. I'd consider cloning-out that small green refraction "dot" on the airborne Chinook to keep it from distracting the viewers eye. Just 2-cents from the purple haze guy ;D

Same critique. Almost chose this as my 2nd POTM nom for the month, but the lens flare helped me break a mental tie between this and another worthy image. Cloning out the green dot and maybe some surgical but restrained use of the burn tool to even out the shadows on the bird in the air would really help this image out.
Great feedback I was thinking the same thing, now how would I go about or what would be the best approach for fixing that with lightroom?

Thanks guys. It was really looking "iffy" on the departure. First it looked like they were going to depart straight south (backlit), then they turned around and took off to the north (tailshot), but then they banked around to the west and gave a great front-top-quarter shot. Hello All,
This is my first post here. FFZ is my home base so I hope grab more images from there to post more in the future.
For now shot was taken on some cheap Kodak film with a Canon 7e and a 24-70 2.8L lens sometime around sunset.
Originally this was hand printed in a color darkroom at ASU but this image was scanned from the film and then color balanced in Adobe LR.

Gloomy day at Falcon in May of 2003 - Hard to believe it was that long ago! This was a demonstration flight of the first Marsh modified OV-10A for the Colombians. There were a number of high ranking USAF officers there along with guards carrying machine guns under their jackets. Shot with an EOS-10D and 300mm f/4L IS. Should have used shutter priority, oh well. I should go back to the original RAW file and see if I can improve on this with tools that are 10 years more up to date.

Caught MitS in some nice light on my way home from work the other day.
First time I've shot with film in over 20+ years. I finally got around to running a roll of Fuji Acros B&W film through the Hasselblad 500CM I purchased back in October. Not sure what I was waiting for; other than I was somewhat intimidated by the entire analog experience after all these years. This is the first image taken on an overcast day earlier this week. Sky is effectively gone and I'm not convinced that D76 is the best developer. I may try Rodinal next time to see if it helps with achieving a finer grain.
The negatives from this first roll actually look fairly good. I've got to get a better scanner. The cheesy model I'm borrowing from my dad does not do an adequate job. So far, it appears the camera and film is up to the task - not sure about the photographer. More to come and I get the opportunity.

A photo from the "way-back-machine". Before I could drive, I spent many a Saturday riding my bicycle to Falcon Field where I'd beg for rides from the local pilots. I also learned to swim in that pool in 1960.
My wife learned to swim in that pool about twenty years later.
Amazing how much that place has changed.
The first time I remember going to Falcon Field was in the late sixties. Lot's of cool stuff there, Constellations, P2Vs, B-17s, CH-21s, etc. Somebody had a Sea Fury as I recall but that was in the seventies. I'll try to dig out some slides. The P2Vs (six or so) were owned by Floyd Stillwell and had been parked along Airlane at Sky Harbor in the early sixties. According to Floyd they only had a few hours on them. They were still in WWII Navy paint.

Never thought I'd catch a live Caribou, but one magically appeared at Falcon today. This was supposed to be just a test shot to make sure I could frame it how I wanted and clear some obstacles (cloned out in this image), but it wound up being the only shot I got since the crew was covering the nose with a canopy cover less than a minute after I shot this.
Awesome catch Joe.

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3926/15035537788_e455525f29_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/oUD4y9)
For as long as I've lived near Falcon, I've never caught any of MD's military birds. Finally caught one today, albeit in somewhat atrocious light from most angles. Shot this using spot metering, then used recovery in Lightroom to recover the blown-out background, but that introduced some quirky pinks and purples in the sky, so I killed those as much as I could while bringing out as much blue as I could. Not a natural-looking shot by any means, but I rather like how it came out.

To me, bizjets just don't get any sexier than the early Learjets. My earliest aviation-related memory is that of watching early-model Learjets streak past my bedroom window when I lived just north of Palwaukee Airport (now Chicago Executive) in Wheeling, Illinois. Seeing these birds takes me back. Hard to believe the Lear 25 is coming up on fifty years old.

During the work week you can often find me driving through Falcon Field before sunrise. While most of the time it is a peaceful way to get my morning started, sometimes I find an interesting visitor. Such was the case this morning. A Douglas A-26C Invader ("Sexy Sue") was on the ramp next to the new administration building. While the nose art my be a little too "racy" for kids, it is a wonderfully restored and maintained airframe.

I had the opportunity to assist Doug Glover during this weekend's 3G Aviation Media air-to-air workshop at Falcon Field. While I was the workshop's gopher and was often out running around fetching lunch or picking up white gaffer's tape or getting more water and ice, or backing up Jay with the behind-the-scenes when he was in a brief or on a flight, I did have some opportunities to get some 'me' shots. This one was a collaboration with one of the students, who didn't have a lot of night photography or light painting experience, but had the vision of doing a light-painting shot with the CJ illuminated with white light and the foreground lit up with blue. Quite a few compromises here, mostly with regard to framing. I would have loves to go for a lower angle, but needed to use the fuselage to mask most of the lights in the background.
Was this the very last one you did? I think you nailed the balance pretty well.
Thanks, this was the last one, right after I switched the white balance back to auto from tungsten. The blue gel I was using is pretty thick, so I really had to bomb the hell out of the foreground with it to even compete with the amber cast from the sodium lights all around. This was just over a minute-long exposure, I'd say a good 45 seconds of that was just lighting up the foreground. Still a bit of work in LR to lighten up the fuselage slightly and get the color right (eyedropper on the skull did the trick, AWB wasn't too far off).
Had the day off and saw some helos in the pattern after dropping my son off at school this morning, so thought I'd swing by and shoot whatever was flying. Not a bad haul for twenty minutes of fence time.

One of the guys said they were going to do some flight training later today (sometime after 9:00 am), but I wasn't able to stick around to catch their departure. Their array of vehicles looked like they were setup to stick around for a while.
(Me on Saturday morning) "Hmmm, looks like Gateway is pretty slow as far as firebombers go right now. I wonder what's out at Falcon..."
Definitely was glad that I waited around for the Cobra to come back.

Chinook, Cobra, & Skycrane what a great trio of aircraft to catch and photograph Thomas, nice work.
Went out to Falcon again today, and a mechanic came up to me and asked the magic words: "Do you want to go on the ramp?"

Another one from this last fire season. I was really hoping to catch this one in the air, but never managed to. Even when I went to Payson to catch it up there, I had just missed it when I got up there, only to have it return to Payson later that evening.
Would love another opportunity to catch this bird flying.
