One of International Air Response's ancient C-130As at Coolidge. This one (N118TG) was used to test the viability of carrying and launching AGM-118 Hellfire missiles as part of the "Killer Herk" tests out at the Yuma Proving Grounds a few years back. I think this is also the one that Bill installed the air attack plumbing on.

James, awesome shot, much better than anything I got! My camera was on the wrong settings and at the wrong focal length (I had my lens locked).
It was great to meet you and Ned (I'm still full from lunch)!!
Lol... you may even be full tomorrow. It was great to meet you guys and this was a definite "lucky vs. good" moment as my lens was locked as well. :-[
C-130H with Invasion Stripes. Thunder over Michigan August 2008.
Nice, have never seen one with stripes before.
I would like help identiying this C-130 variant. I caught this coming into DM on 9/20/06. My best guess is an EC-130J Commando Solo. I welcome other suggestions.
Bingo on the EC-130J. This is the PSYOPS variant operated by the PAANG's 193rd SOW.
Outstanding catch, I'd love to gets shots of one of these.

Ned, that is a Comando Solo bird. I believe that the unit is a Air National Guard Unit out of Harrisburg, PA. I used to know several folks who were attached to this unit in Harrisburg.

Holy hell James, what an awesome catch.
I had no idea they had a TC at D-M.
Uh.....what's a TC?
Trainer Herc, apparently there's only one TC-130H model. Assigned to the 55th ECG and the plainest Herc in the fleet.
Okay...so what makes it a trainer? I'm figuring it still has the dual controls, just like any typical transport, utility or airliner cockpit, and I don't see a second cockpit above and behind the first one ( ;)). So is it a lack of mission specific equipment that makes it a trainer?
Could be an EW trainer for the 55th ESG's Compass Call crews with simulated stations. Could also be a base "hack" for proficiency hours to keep time down on the mission-specific birds. I'm just throwing stuff out there.
I think Joe's right on the money, I have a friend associated with the aircraft that I'll see this weekend and make an inquiry.
Said TC-130 is a trainer for aircrew, outfitted with the same series of engines as the ACs, ECs, etc. so it is apparently the fastest non-J model Herc around.

I will attempt to get better photos of it.
I did some research on this plane. According to the Eglin website, it was assigned to the 46th Test Wing and they used it as a test bed for an airborne laser system.
Here is a photo of this aircraft from the Eglin AFB's website.

Not your everyday Herc photos - here is the story. I was scheduled to take my father to the Yuma Air Show Saturday. He got very ill Friday evening and the trip got canceled (he is resting well now). By Saturday afternoon things were back to normal - as much as that can be at my house - and I decided to run out to Willie late. Five Herks were sitting on the ramp too close for my lens. Two T-38s, four AV-8Bs and one F-18F were also on the ramp. With not much happening and not wanting to go home empty-handed, I took a few "close-up" shots of one of the Herc's. In color they were extremely "blah" IMO. Accordingly, I started playing with them as B&W conversions. Not sure how much I like them, but it has been fun to explore.

Hi Jeff, nice shot. I looked on your Flickr site, got a MK IV now?
Thank you Lynn and Yes Sir! Just about the time I made up my mind on what two camera bodies to get, B&H (and everyone else) ran out of cameras. I walked around the house with my lip dragging the ground and bemoaning my poor luck (the wife just about kicked me out). Out of nowhere, I get an email from B&H saying they had gotten in a small shipment of Canon equipment and could fill my order. Just about a week ago, the FedEx truck dropped-off a 1D Mark IV, a 7D, and a few pieces of L glass. To say I'm in hog heaven is the understatement of the century. I don't deserve this great equipment; however, I'm not sending it back ;D
I know you've been looking into the Mark IV yourself. I can't recommend it enough. In the short time I've had it, I've been very impressed with the build and image quality.
Congratulations, I did get mine back in November. Now if Canon could package this camera in a 8 ounce body and make it fit in my pocket, It really would be ideal! :)

Shame on me Lynn; of course you already have a Mark IV - I was thinking of Ned. It is definitely built on the stout side. With my shaky hands, I use the extra "heft" to help me steady shoots - especially when panning.
Getting your hands on all those new toys will make you a little giddy! ;D

Jeff,
Thanks, but you should really include 'Sun' in there, somewhere... ;)

Very well-done Dave. Glad you were able to make it out there.

Was able to make it only because it was a Friday, not a Saturday morning - which means it didn't interfere with my Saturday morning runs. How else do you think I keep my great looking...legs? ;)

Just started - I recently found this really cool book about taking airplane pictures. It's called, "Aviation Photography, A Pictorial Guide". I think it's written by some interesting fellow from Tucson, his name is something like, James O'Rear? I should Google it to make sure I've got the name correct. ;)
Thought I'd try a b&w conversion on one of the KC-130J images I shot at Willie recently. C&C welcome.

It's the old rescue-bird nose from back when they were still using the Fulton recovery system.
Ok, thanks Joe.
This stinkin' valley fever has me home bound today! I missed Yuma yesterday due to a meeting that kept me in Phoenix until after lunch and now I'm missing Copperstate with this crap. I've got nothing left but to sit at the computer and screw with images. Sorry for the rant, but I've been fooling with this stuff for over a month. It took my doctor three weeks to diagnose that it was more than just the flu. Some days I feel normal and think I'm past it; then the next day I feel worse. Us old guys just don't repair as quickly as the younger folks. I will now channel Chuck Yeager and calm down.

^^^^ Nice light on this Herc Barry - well done.
Who operates this WC-130H??
Lockheed WC-130H Hercules 64-14866 118 AW This Herk shows mixed unit assignments. The nose is 118th AW Tennessee ANG Nashville International Airport. Above the wheel well and on the tail painted Florida ANG from Jacksonville International Airport.

This aircraft was originally built as HC-130H with the Fulton Recovery System forks on the nose. Converted to WC-130H and used as "weather bird" until WC-130Js came into service. Then they were handed off to ANG squadrons where they were stripped of their weather gear and turned into regular haulers (nose remained same shape as original HC-130H)
That bird was assigned to the Florida ANG's 125th FW, 159th FS (F-15C/D unit) up until the end of January. It was based at Jacksonville IAP and was the Wing's OSA bird (Operational Support Airlift). Now assigned to the Tennessee ANG 118th AW, 105th AS out of Nashville IAP. This unit is gaining a training mission for the ANG C-130 fleet. The nose unit markings are usually the first to be applied simply because they take such little time to modify. The tail band will be removed and replaced when the aircraft goes back to the Lockheed depot in Atlanta for it's scheduled heavy MX. There is a small chance the TN ANG might replace the tail band, but it is not likely.
Thanks JW Air for the input. Much Appreciated
bill
Jarrod, was this the same Fulton-nosed bird that came into Willie a while back?
Great catch, Bill. I love birds in transitional markings.
Lousy picture, but does anybody know what the thing on the rear fuselage is?
UPDATE - According to Joe Baugher this is an MC-130E Combat Talon I Special Forces support aircraft. It's 64-5065.
That's a Nemesis DIRCM system. Basically a laser in a turret that "dazzles" IR guided missiles.
Cool catch. I thought for sure when you posted that a C-130 came in and turned off that way that it was an ANG bird equipped with the MAFFS system for firefighting work. There was one working the Wallow Fire out of Willie last summer.

Thanks for the info. Interesting gadget.
I don't think any of the MAFFS planes have been activated yet this year. They can only be used if all of the civilian contract tankers are busy. I just saw an article the other day about the NC ANG ones training back east.
It was pretty crowded down on that end of the ramp. A Neptune was parked there and later they sent an Air Force C-12C down there. That one actually pulled into the FBO ramp and was re-directed. It was a white one with "United States Air Force" over the windows and "AFMC" on the tail.

Can someone perhaps help me with the bureau number for this bird

Just put a "16" in front of it. You can actually see the full BuNo in the full-size version on Flickr, it's on the side of the fuselage just under the tail.
Wow how did I miss that, too much trying to google I guess, thanks Joe

Terrific shot of the Herc Harvey. You did a great job on the panning and getting a nice prop disc on those four engines. Is this the new 300 f/2.8L glass earning its keep ;D
Small side note, it appears you need to adjust/level your image just a tad.
Thanks for the comments Jeff. I run into this problem a lot due to the angle that I'm shooting from, I try to counter it with the camera as I'm shooting. But with a moving target I want to make sure of subject focus and centering also. My problem is that since I only use IPhoto in my Mac for processing, as soon as you try to straighten a picture you loose sharp focus, in either direction. Will a program like Lightroom or Photoshop allow me to do this without ruining the focus. I have a significant number of photos that could use this fix. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Harvey

Lightroom will let you recrop and correct horizontal/vertical issues with ease. You don't need photoshop for that. You should download a trail version of LR4 for free and try it. I think you will like it for 90% of all your image editing work.
Thanks for the advice Jeff, I've been meaning to try something more than Iphoto for sometime now.

Lucky catch as well, as they tend to shut down or throttle back the outboard engines while taxiing in.

Very cool shot Anna, that hidden back light gives this a "very cool" glow. Nice catch.

Agreed. Very cool. Was this taken with your extra tall tripod?
Thanks Harvey and Scott.... :)
The extra photons from the work light resulted in a better affect then I imagined when I took the shot. The back lit glow and the ghosts from the technicians are pretty neat.
Scott, I purchased the tallest carbon fiber tripod Gitzo offers a month or so ago. So much more stable then my DIY version. It will go to 109" tall. More then enough to get over the fence at Willie.
109 inches....Wow!

LOL.... I need a step ladder that is about two feet taller to really take advantage of the height. Unfortunately, a taller ladder will not fit in my car. >:(

Very cool Harvey (I've been saying that a lot lately about these images from your past). The AC looks pissed-off just sitting there. I suspect a lot of VC and Chinese regulars hated that thing with a passion. My cousin told me that during his first tour he witnessed AC's sending many of the enemy to an early reunion with their ancestors ;)
The fellow next to one of the Vulcans looks like me in my high school/early college days - damn hippy!
That one goes back a few years judging by the three-bladed props. A formidable machine for sure!
I can picture you with long hair Jeff, it's a stretch but I can see it. ;D This machine really delivered lots of fire power with the cannons and gatling guns, a real warrior.
I believe this to be one of the first models of the AC-130s Scott. This photo is about 1974.

Harvey, your Specter image is awesome and must have been one of the early versions of the platform because it was still configured with three bladed props. The new gunships have done away with the 105mm and I think the also replaced the 20mm gatling guns with 7.62 miniguns. I think they did retain the 40mm Bofors aft of the wing. Great historical image.
Thank you Vance. That photo was shot about 1976 at Rickenbacker AFB, Columbus, Oh.
