Thanks Scott, there was a sign on the mobil walkway aimed toward the pilots. It read: SAVE FUEL , APU off until 15 mins prior to departure.  They should have added, we're in Phoenix, let them SWEAT!  :)

We've noticed at Honeywell that the carriers are running their APUs for less time per start-shutdown cycle so I guess they're reading the sign.  One summer I was on a flight to Oregon and the APU wasn't working at all.  We sat waiting in line to take off for close to half and hour.  I'm used to the heat here but it was intolerable in that CRJ without the a/c working.
