Phoenix-Goodyear is notable for the 20-30 commercial airplanes that are parked/stored on the west side of the airport.
Some are sealed for potential future use, and some are in the process of being scavenged for parts.

Awesome Rob. Was hoping someone would get a Goodyear thread going.
I've been chatting with the Airport Manager (Barney Helmick) today, via email. I was trying to get us access to the storage area, but it's private property and they don't allow tours anymore. So, I asked him about ladders along the fence line, and here's his reply:
QuoteI would not use a ladder, that will draw the attention of our staff and or
local police. Not that it is a good spot, but photography is allowed along
the fence adjacent to the Terminal building on the east side of the
runway. The area next to the fence along the storage field is private
property and the owners do not like people there. Guess we are no longer
very friendly to Bird lovers. Sorry about that. If in the area I would
recommend you stop in our Terminal building and view our artwork. We have
a display of photos from the Navy days and our history in the lobby.

Hmm. Awesome that you tried.
Maybe contact the owners?

Just got this from Barney, I questioned his ladder comment:
QuoteWe do not get much transient military on a regular basis. The issue is not
with our PD, but with the AeroTurbine the tenant we lease the storage
field to. They have had an incident in the past of an aircraft being
photographed and put on the web that upset the aircraft owner. Since then
they have become extremely sensitive to photos taken on the field.
Here's AeroTurbine's site:
http://www.aeroturbine.com/
The comment about shooting from the East side near the terminal building is crap. They have old fuel tanker trucks lined up nose to tail blocking the majority of the view of the tarmac and runways.
Even if those weren't there - you would have to use a 100-500 to have any chance to taking anything decent.

Maybe check w/ them (Aeroturbine) and see if they would give permission (and tell us which planes they don't want posted).

I've already asked! ;)
Here's Barney Helmick's reply:
QuoteWe rarely get what would be considered a aircraft that is sensitive in nature, but what happens is the owners of the aircraft do not want anyone to know that their airplane is in storage for business reasons.
Then they should just completely repaint the plane and change the registration ???
Obviously it wasn't United or Continental that was upset. No way not to know who those planes belong to.

On the NationalGeographic channel there is a series called 'Man Made' and this week's episode is about breaking down/recycling an old Boeing 747, by none other than AeroTurbine at Goodyear.
Aero's goal - break the plane down in 12 weeks.
Looks like the National Geographic folks didn't get the "no photography" memo. ;)
Thanks for looking into this Matt. I have only been there once and just barely went down the dirt road along the fence (for fear of my car hitting a rock and having to pay for it). I mean the reason for posting pictures on the web is stupid, but at least GYR isnt too far from a road like the airpark in Marana.

But did you notice that it looked like AeroTurbine put a dummy reg number on the 747 that they took apart?
It wasn't the same 747 that they showed landing - the one landing was this ex-Corsair 747 (which was still on the field earlier this month.

I went to take a look at some of the stored aircraft out at Goodyear on Saturday. Walked right along the fence and wasn't bothered by anybody. AeroTurbine employees were out there moving aircraft around, and they either didn't see the only two people in a huge dirt lot walking along their fence with cameras or they didn't care we were there.
- United Airlines Boeing 747-422
- Corsair Boeing 747-312
- VARIG Boeing 767-383/ER
Was the power cart running on the Varig 767? It was back in June - so it makes me thing that one is just being stored temporarily.
Not good for Continental when these are parked here:

More to come.
:)
Has anyone been out at Goodyear lately? I liveout here and am on the flight path as they come in to the airport, looked like they had a few come in, one looked to be a 767. Let me know if anyone is planning on going out, I have been thinking of taking a trip
What a shame ,so Jason do you know when our Corsair 747's are coming in?

Does the NASCAR air force (aircraft belonging to drivers, teams, officials, sponsors, etc.) usually use this airport on race weekends? Or, do they go somewhere else?
If here, is there any good location to take photos of them?
I don't know about locations out there, but there are quite a few of them that do use Goodyear.

A good number of them have started using Goodyear as the airport has become more corporate aircraft friendly. Traditionally Roush & Gibbs and any teams contracting with ExpressJet have used PHX though.
As for good photo locations out at GYR, I really haven't found much... though for late afternoon shooting of the boneyard aircraft, the new baseball stadiums on the west side have some great public access spots with sidewalks that go behind them.
My .02 :-)
Thanks,
Ryan
Thanks, guys. I'll have to check out that location by the baseball fields.
Thanks, Jason. I'll probably go by there in November when the racers are in town again.
Of course, the plane in your first picture (N6JR) is the one that Jack Roush crashed at Oshkosh this year.
coool!
Great shots Jason. Great timing as well. ;D
Excellent catch, know if they FOD'd the engine?
What the heck is that?!? Are they converting Sabreliners for firefighting or are they trying to squeeze an extra passenger in there
Sensors or SLAR?
Certificated as "Experimental" and registered to Lock-Mart so it could be something exotic.
Looks like a radar system similar to those used by the E-8 and the RAF's Sentinels. Lock-Mart was pretty far along in the testing of systems for the Aerial Common Sensor before that was scrapped, and a radar fit similar to this was a component in all of the competing ACS proposals. The need for a replacement for several legacy SIGINT platforms still exists, so perhaps this is part of the on-again/off-again ACS bid.
Is this currently flying out of KGYR, or was this just a gas-n-go or something?
Really nice shots, Jason!

I hope I am not incurring the wrath of the mods by pulling a Lazarus with this thread, but I was curious if anyone had any tips for checking out the stored aircraft here at Goodyear? I gather that they are stored on the west-side. Any times of day that are better? Any definite "don'ts"? Don't wanna step on anybody's toes or run afoul of any pre-existing law enforcement arrangements.
Cheers!

Hey Guys,
Catching up with some stuff I took late last year. It was the day after the final AirTran revenue flight, and I was kicking around the house in Cave Creek looking for something to do. For fun I checked the flightaware page for Goodyear and noted the AirTran 717 fleet was due into Goodyear for storage pending Deltafication. I mean every last 717 they still operated, something like 14 frames in one day. Having been a stalwart Citrus customer, and having enjoyed many a morning listening to XM satellite radio whilst jetting to ATL, there was no question where I was gonna be. It was a bit sad knowing this was the last time I would see my favorite domestic carrier to fly on, one that had taken me to many awesome events, including more than one spotting outing. I recognize the material here is a bit repetitive, but as it is the last time we will be seeing these sharp little 717s, I think we can let it slide...

Thank you very much Jeff. I wasn't sure where a good spot was to shot from. I was driving S. on Bullard Ave and all of a sudden I saw him bearing down on me from the right side. I stopped the car in the left turn lane that had a green light. I jumped out of the car and started shooting. There was one car that came up and was very kind, didn't even blow the horn because of the green light. I guess they were watching this big bird land also.
