Thank you, and thank you!  Joe and I still plan to make some changes to the forum, it's pretty basic right now, but it's working and serving its purpose.

You've done your work too, thank you so much for the logo!

Thanks Joe  & Matt,  I remember looking at the series of photos right after they took off, and then I checked my camera to see if it was set to monochrome somehow.  Here's another of the same bird, just a second or so before the last.  Here you can make out some afterburner.  I also posted one from the same day of an Allegiant MD taking off.  Kinda like how it came out also.

Nice shot of the camo bird Matt

Hmm.  Maybe a CAG/CO/Colorbird thread?  Feel free to get one going in the military section.

Still kicking myself for missing that colorbird - that was the same day as the Coolidge fly-in back in February, right?

Here's a few older catches.  Always nice when the pilots do a wing rock as they go by the peanut gallery.
Look in the cockpits.  You can see one of the backseaters waving, and you can see the single seater moving the stick.

Close by.  Reno Air Races, 2007.  National Anthem Flyby.  Caught me by too much of a surprise.  I didn't get too good of a shot.  I was set up for props, so had a slow shutter, which lowered the keeper ratio for their flyby.   Kind of like a sneak pass, feels great, but the photos sometimes suffer.

Thanks Joe! Long story short, they were supposed to do the CVW-5 changeover ceremony for the GW in Hawaii, but the sailor that was smoking on the GW where he shouldn't have been, started a fire that caused $8m in damage to the ship. They had to bring it to San Diego to have the work done, so the air wing staged out of North Island for a couple of weeks until the boat was ready.

Title: Re: McDonnell Douglas F/A-18A/B/C/D Hornet
Post by: Dave S. on August 22, 2010, 08:24:52 AM
James,

I went back to check the original file, zooming in as best I could, and I think it's just a standard nose config - not the recce nose.

I believe those are just the standard vents just in front of the nose gear doors.  It doesn't appear that the ATARS nose has these vents.  Also, the ATARS nose has two windows that are just forward of the pitot tubes (forward of the previously mentioned vents), which this plane does not appear to have either.  So, based on that - my guess is that this plane has the standard nose.

Joe, or any other of our in-house experts, am I on track or way off base?

- Dave

Jay/David.  The Hornet, to my knowledge does not have a reconnissance nose option.  Like the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18s use a pod mounted system, called SHARP.

The Shared Reconnaissance Pod (SHARP) system provides Navy and Marine Corps Hornets with high- and medium-altitude tactical reconnaissance capability.  SHARP is a multi-functioned reconnaissance pod, adaptable to several airborne platforms for manned tactical airborne reconnaissance. The SHARP system is compatible with both the Super Hornet and F/A-18C and D Hornet variants. The SHARP pod is carried on the F/A-18 centerline with a standard 30-inch attachment, has a 1760 interface to aircraft, and is the size of a 330-gallon fuel tank. It has state of the art sensors (manufactured by Recon Optical Inc.) to satisfy Navy tactical airborne reconnaissance, replacing the F-14 Tomcat Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS).

Vance,

Here's some info on the ATARS recce nose that is fitted to the F/A-18D to fulfill the tactical recon mission for the Marine Corps.  Not sure how this hardware compares with the capabilities of the TARPS pod.  All that I know is what the unit looks like when installed on a 'D' version of the Hornet.

Yup - ATARS is exclusive to the Marine Corps and was fielded to regain some of the capabilities lost when VMFP-3 stood down and retired their RF-4Bs back in the early 90s.
Here's what an ATAR-equipped F/A-18D looks like.  Only a handful of Ds received the mod, and all of them serve with VMFA(AW) squadrons.

I was not aware that the Marines had some of their D model Hornets reconfigured with ATARS.   The ATARS installation in the Hornet photo looks permanent.  The SHARP pod is supposed to enable any Hornet to be used as a recce bird.  Regarding SHARP capabilities, it's supposed to be the latest in technical capability.  I don't know how old ATARS is, but if it's over three years old, it's probably been superseded in technical capabilities, sensor resolution, speed, and data linkage.  Joe, that's a great photo of the D.

Title: Re: McDonnell Douglas F/A-18A/B/C/D Hornet
Post by: Joe Copalman on October 10, 2010, 11:18:32 AM
-323's tailcode is "WS."  They wear the "NK" code when attached to CVW-14 for deployments aboard the Ronald Reagan.  Anytime you see a Marine Hornet with a tailcode starting with "A" or "N," it means it is attached to a Carrier Air Wing.

You'll see boat-coded Harriers as well, but it's not as simple as it is with the Hornets.  Harriers take on the tailcode of whichever helicopter squadron they are attached to at the time, so there's much more variation than simply the "N" or "A" prefixes.

There's an awful lot of Super Hornets getting posted here.
There's a separate thread for the Super Hornet, which are E, F, and G models, anything with a rectangular engine inlet.

Might just be the angle, but it does look a little different.

Perhaps an adapter for the AIM-9X?

According to my Avitaion Ordinance brother it is the LAU-7 launcher rail for the AIM-9X (good on you Joe) but he couldn't tell if it was a D/A or the newer E/A or F/A version without looking at the data plate. Used because the X doesn't need external coolant for the seeker heads like the older missiles.

Thanks Harvey.  They performed their "Low Show" at MCAS Beaufort because the cloud cover was in and out almost all day.  That didn't prevent me from getting one of the worst sunburns I've had in years.  Yikes that smarts.
