What are these "boat codes" you speak of?

-323's tailcode is "WS."  They wear the "NK" code when attached to CVW-14 for deployments aboard the Ronald Reagan.  Anytime you see a Marine Hornet with a tailcode starting with "A" or "N," it means it is attached to a Carrier Air Wing.

You'll see boat-coded Harriers as well, but it's not as simple as it is with the Hornets.  Harriers take on the tailcode of whichever helicopter squadron they are attached to at the time, so there's much more variation than simply the "N" or "A" prefixes.

This photo could have been taken 28 years ago.  410 Sqn and VMFA-314 were the first squadrons in their respective services to receive the then-new F/A-18As back in 1982.

The Legend of the Guardian of the Line
The Greek God "Linus" comes from the Greek name Λινος (Linos) meaning "leg."
In Greek legend, he was the son of the God Apollo who was accidentally killed when he stepped over the white line.
