Jeff & Matt,

How was shooting from the south side on this trip?  Looks like you guys have some pretty killer shots from there.  I thought the TB Terminal was a decently far aware from there, did you have to crop your Captains Kangaroo shot quite a bit?

Thanks Dave. Matt may have a different take on this but I found "The Hill" location to work very well for departures, taxiing and the west side of the TB Terminal. There are some foreground obstructions (not unlike the overpass location for RWY 24) you have to deal with for departures, but generally you get nice opportunities from this area. If you get lucky, some of the foreground obstructions can add nice framing elements (see image below). Not a good location for arrivals unless you have a very long lens and can cut the haze/marine layer. The TB Terminal (sounds like a building for lung diseases) was not a significant crop. I was using my 100-400 and mainly cropped in an effort to eliminate some rooftop HVAC units in the foreground. A 500mm would have definitely been better for the TB Terminal shots, but the 100-400 is not a handicap by any means. As is the case for nearly any type of outdoor photography, early and late light is excellent from "The Hill".

Dave, I was way more successful than I was shooting at the overpass, much less haze this trip than our last trip.  Most of that success was based on the random conditions of the two days.  Based on the type of photos from the two spots, I prefer shooting from the overpass.  I really want another chance there on a better day.  I'm not a huge fan of cluttered airport shots, and that is what you get from Imperial Hill.  I did enjoy my time at Imperial Hill, but the company I keep helped with that.  I guess to sum it all up, I prefer the Westchester Overpass to Imperial Hill.  But, they both offer some good, and very different, shots.
