Peruvian Air Force Twin Otter. I have no idea why it was at DVT.

Here's one you don't see every day. It's a Rutan VariViggen. It was Burt Rutan's first full size aircraft, based partly on the Saab Viggen. He supposedly sold 600 sets of plans but only about 20 were built. Wikipedia says there are "fewer than five" still flying.

Strange little plane. Built in Russia and marketed in the U.S. by Discovery Aviation as the Discovery 201. Only one flying in the U.S.

It was a surprise to see this one on a low approach at DVT.

Yak-50 at DVT.

Todd McCutchan has acquired one of these too (haven't seen it yet), so I think there are at least three of them based at DVT now. Good news for the upcoming fly-in season.

A pretty cool plane. It's a homebuilt replica of the XF9C-1 prototype for the Curtiss F9C-3 Sparrowhawk. That was a "parasite" fighter that was carried on the US Navy airships back in the 1930's. It could be launched and recovered in the air using a trapeze-like device.

It flew in with a couple of Stearmans and a Waco, all regulars at the local fly-ins, and it's registered in Chandler, so maybe we'll see it on the fly-in circuit.

CORRECTION: Turns out this is not a replica XF9C-1. I assumed it was since it says XF9-1 on the tail. I looked at some pictures of the Sparrowhawk and this is quite different. It actually looks more like an XF11C. I guess I'll have to talk to the pilot the next time I see it and ask him.

'Precious Metal' arriving at DVT on the way home from Reno, where he finished fourth in the gold race, although they didn't have their best engine.

New paint scheme this year.

Pretty sure this is the aircraft carrying the interior and panel design that I shot for Cutter last year...

Cool to see an exterior.  I was supposed to shoot this air to air, but then the axe fell on our friendly, neighborhood Cutter employee/AzAP Member. :(

I think that would be these pictures?

Wow, a PT6 powered Lancair! No wonder it goes 354 mph!

The record was set in 2002 and still stands. It's speed over a 3 kilometer course for aircraft with takeoff weight of 1000 to 1750 kg and a turboprop engine.

Interestingly, the record for the same weight and distance with an internal combustion engine is actually faster (373.93 mph). That was set by a Thunder Mustang with a Falconer V-12 engine in 2005.

Very cool Twin Otter taking off. Viking is the company that builds new ones now, although this appears to be a conversion, since it's registered as a 1975 DHC-6. Came out of the Honeywell hangar and returned later and went back there.
