Earlier in the spring would be better as the light gets worse as you get closer to summer.  No need to rough it either (I don't think you can camp overnight at the canyon anyway, but I might be wrong about that) as there are a few small towns nearby with motels.  Like Eric said though, it can be a crapshoot in terms of activity. 

One cool thing I noticed looking on Google maps is that there's an abandoned mining town named after my wife's great-great-great grandfather (John Lourie Beveridge, who was Governor of Illinois from 1873 to 1877) that's not too far from the Canyon.  Apparently it's really difficult to access, but still kind of cool.

I go camping at hot springs in the Saline Valley, which is part of Death Valley National Park. It is a popular place for planes flying out of Edwards, China Lake, Lemoore, and Fallon.  The hot spring itself is a navigational way point on low altitude routes through the valley.  You can count on seeing several fighters fly over the camp every weekday.
