Some shots taken Saturday after the weather broke. Amazing low clouds & vapor, wish it was like that more often at PHX.

Tower Guy

Chris, outstanding group of shots, my fav is the ASR radar and radio tower to the right. That sunset is near perfect, color, clouds, and aircraft in the background, beautiful.

American Airlines departing on a stormy night.

Anna - Great image. I photographed that exact same plane; apparently only moments before you. I like yours much better for several reasons. First, you allowed the 737 to rise slightly above the color chaos of the background lights being smeared by your slow shutter speed panning. This better allows for a contrasting of the dark sky background and the near white fuselage - the aircraft is more clearly seen. Second, the clouds at the top of the frame help identify the "weather" in the area of PHX. Third, you did not crop tight in camera (as I did). Allowing the extra space ahead of the climbing 737 helps to accentuate the motion of this departing aircraft. One of my all time favorite images from Sky Harbor. If Matt had not nominated this image for POTM, I would have. Well done young lady.

Thank you very much Jeff...

I wish I had put that much thought into the image.  I was taking pictures to the west and was down a bit north of that edge of the deck with my 24-105mm when I turned around and saw the AA flight departing.  Fire off some quick shots from where I was standing.  Serendipity that I managed to get a relatively clean shot without people in the way.

Joe - Your image makes it look as if you were shooting through a gauze curtain. Very cool effect; intended or not. I did not think HDR with either this version or the first. The muted colors of the 737 behind the veil of rain is contrasted by the "pop" of color from the strobes. Was this a slightly longer exposure?

That was the effect I was going for, focusing on the rain hitting the ledge in the foreground with the airplane being blurred out in the background.  Had to jack up the vibrance and the blue and orange saturation a bit to get the 737 to pop a bit - the colors in the original are much more muted, like a color image with a 50-75% monochrome layer over it.  Shutter speed was 1/25 to get long streaks of water.
"I'm sorry sir, you can't take photos of that aircraft."

"If you've seen my work, you'd know I really can't take photos of any aircraft."

Was kind of upset that I got to the airport after the sun had set but I was still able to get a few good photos...

Nicely done Matt. Your three photographs motivated me to process a few more images from that wet Saturday afternoon/evening.
