Did I
a) take a one day trip to Portland?
b) steal Matt's memory card(s)?
c) spend some time at Sky Harbor this last Friday morning?

...okay, the last one doesn't have any cool flow visualization, but just your classic Mad Dog planting it heavy.

...and while I was at Sky Harbor Friday morning, I managed to catch this guy coming in, with his RAT* deployed.  No other sign of distress from him, so not sure what the story was.  From the other pictures in the sequence, he may have had his APU running, but no conclusive evidence (it's Sunday, and football on the tv) to suggest either engine was shut down.

* RAT = Ram Air Turbine. They are a backup system, used to provide electrical power, in case there's an 'issue' with either the engine driven generator(s) and/or the APU.  The slipstream, caused by the aircraft's forward motion, provides the motive force to spin the 'turbine', thus providing power to flight critical components.

At least they put it up front to minimize the sphincter-tightening potential to the passengers.  :-\
