Arizona (From Sea to Shining Sea) (Second Edition)
by Carole K. Standard
page 56
Franklin Watts/Children's Press, a division of Scholastic Library Publishing

It's not a photo of an airplane, but it is aviation related.
I was hired by Scholastic Publishing to take this photo as an update for the Second Edition of their Arizona (From Sea to Shining Sea) children's book.

The Legend of the Guardian of the Line
The Greek God "Linus" comes from the Greek name Λινος (Linos) meaning "leg."
In Greek legend, he was the son of the God Apollo who was accidentally killed when he stepped over the white line.

America from the Air: A Guide to the Landscape Along Your Route
by Daniel Mathews and James S. Jackson
page 248
Houghton Mifflin

Again, it's not a photo of an airplane, but it is aviation related (how it was taken and the book it is in).
This was taken on a Southwest Airlines flight from Sea-Tac to Sky Harbor as we were passing through 18,000'.  I had asked the Captain which side Mt. Rainier would be on as we departed out of Seattle, and I made sure I had a seat for the view.

This photo has a few other credits as well:

  • Displayed in We Are All Photographers Now! at the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • 2008 Arizona State Fair - Honorable Mention

That's a pretty cool shot, especially given it's taken through a airliners window.

One month after the events of Sept. 11th 2001, I was on a similar Southwest flight from Sea-Tac to Phx.  After a normal take off and climbout, the pilot announced he would be making a scenic deviation.  He then pulled back the power and dove for Mt. Rainier.  We leveled off well below the summit of the mountain and did a full circle around the mountain about 1/4 of a mile from the snow covered slopes.  After a circle of the mountain the captain climbed away from the mountain and resumed the normal profile.  Very Cool! A few weeks later I spoke to a pilot with Alaskan who said that deviation can be approved by ATC as a "mountain tour".

Obviously not aviation-related.
"I'm sorry sir, you can't take photos of that aircraft."

"If you've seen my work, you'd know I really can't take photos of any aircraft."

I am quite proud to announce that my book Aviation Photography: A Pictorial Guide is now available for purchase! Over a year in the making, it is filled with images taken from Alaska to Arizona, California to England and many places in-between. Full-color throughout, it is a great introduction to photographing aircraft as well as figuring out where they are (or will be), selecting equipment to take on your aviation excursions as well as strategies on figuring out which aircraft you just photographed. Our own Chris Heising is on the cover, Bill McCarroll's in the flight line etiquette section and Joe Copalman was kind enough to concoct a bunch of lies about me for the forward. Many of the images inside were obtained because of my involvement with the AzAP group of which I am quite proud to be called a member.

James, Where can I buy your book?  I want a copy...no, I need a copy.  Congratulations.   ;D

Jeff D. Welker

I ordered my copy on lulu - http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/aviation-photography-a-pictorial-guide/15067678

I was very easy. Now I've just got to get James to autograph it for me. That may be difficult with him being gone on the book tour and doing "Live with Regis & Kelly"  ;D
