OK, I'll have my 5D Mk2 and my 7D bodies.

Sure thing lenses I'll be bringing will be my 70-200 F/2.8L and 400 F/5.6L, and my 10-22 EF-S for my 7D. We all know the L glass is interchangable with both cameras, buying me a little more reach on the 7D.

Between the two bodies and the L glass, will I have enough range?

Any other options I should consider? I have the kit 28-135 EF-S and a low end EF 100-300 which I could bring as well. It boils down to how much gear I want to lug around, I guess.

And what about bringing a P&S? Useless or not?

Have any of you shot this event before?

Thanks for raising these questions Scott. I was going to do the same thing. Hopefully, one or more of our fellow addicts has been to this and can advise us accordingly.

Your lens lineup is almost exactly what I carry minus the 50mm 1.8 I carry.  I would think you should be good, with the 10-22 I am assuming you are going to be on base. Expect plenty of back lighting. I like outside the base for better light in the afternoon time.

You've got a little bit of a trap there Scott...

70-200 is a bit on the short end and the 400 prime may be too limiting in some cases (to narrow a field of view for four-ship formations unless you catch them at just the right angle.)

I think I'd go with the 70-200 on the 7D and the 400 on the 5DMkII and be prepared to crop a bit with both.

The 10-22 will be handy on the ramp.  I'd consider bringing a Speedlite if you have one to help open up shady-side shadows where necessary.

Scott: If you will be on-base for media day, you may want the 28-135 on your 5D Mk2. I've gone to media day several times during the Heritage Flight Conference. You will likely be able to walk among the static planes with a military escort.. The wide angle zoom is perfect for these static shots plus some nearby taxi shots. I find the 7D paired with the 400 f 5.6 ideal for single aircraft. You will likley see the F-22, F-15E etc. demos and they are a thrill. The real challenge on base is the direction of the light. Have fun and good luck.

Thanks for the info guys. I have no Speedlite yet, but I do have an old brand-X flash from my 35mm days which does in fact throw some light, so maybe I'll bring that just in case. I have absolutely no lighting experience. This should be interesting.

Unless you know for a fact it's safe (and you've already used it before...) be careful with old flashes!

Wrong Voltage could lead to very bad things...

Oh my. I had no idea. I tossed it on my 7D once, just messing around and it worked. But I know nothing about different voltages. I'll have to do some looking when I get home.
