Doubtful he flew all the way from Whidbey just to shoot a touch-and-go at TIA. Wonder if -129 has a det at El Centro right now.
I know not his comings or goings, just his approach and departure.
Damn, that was flipping poetic!!

Why do the Prowlers from VAQ-29 have Marines on on the right side and Navy on the left side?
VAQ-129 is the RAG for all NAVAIR Prowler crews, so they train both Navy and Marine aviators. VFA-106 and -125 are the same way with their legacy Hornets, but not on their Super Hornets since the Marines don't fly those.
VMFAT-101 at Miramar is also in the same category, a Fleet Replacement Squadron. They train both Navy and Marines pilots on the F/A-18 and have both Navy and Marines on their airplanes.
Thanks Joe & Chris. I'm never too old to learn, now if I could only remember.

Wonderful set Scott. I've never had the chance to shoot the Prowler - maybe someday.
Thanks Jeff! I've always liked the Prowler but the only ones I've photographed up until recently were a couple that were going into MASDC back around 1979 or so. Not sure how long they'll be around. I've heard VAQ-129 might not be coming back to NAF El Centro with Prowlers but it's not certain.

I am totally blown away Scott. As good as any A2A image I've ever seen. May I be so bold as to ask the details of you A2A mission?
Thank you Jeff! That was taken from a KC-130J about 45 miles off the NC coast. We were at 13,000 feet. I forgot my light jacket so as a consequence I was partially frozen by the time we closed the ramp.

Well done Scott. Despite the cold air, I'm sure you were having a blast. When you get a few extra minutes, I'd love for you to share what lens, exif, etc you used. I'm guessing it is a different setup compared to when we shoot G2A at places like El Centro. For example, were you blasting away with your Mark4's burst rate or can you be more selective in pulling the trigger?
Phenomenal shot, Scott. The Prowler is definitely at the top of my want-to-shoot-from-a-Herk list.
Any word on how much longer the VMAQs are going to be flying them? I read a while back that they were on the chopping block.
Not sure how much longer they'll be flying. I'll see if I can find out. VAQ-129 will have at least one more Det at El Centro as I understand it. This one was pure luck. It wasn't even on the schedule until the last minute.
Damn Scott...
I almost feel like you're cheating on us! (Almost)

Thanks for the kind words Matt. One of my favorites also.
Jeff - I really like the feel of that photo. Very Nice!

Oh wow. I thought you were being clever with the VMAQT title, but it looks like they've really gone full-time with the training mission. The article I read really didn't say much about whether the other three VMAQs have been augmented to cover the gap of losing a deployable squadron.
Will be interesting to see if we get them out west, either at Yuma or NAFEC.
Great shots, by the way. Light looks like it was a bit harsh, but you seem to have dealt with it pretty well.

Great shots Jay. I've always liked the look of the Prowler with the canopies open.
Thanks Scott! ;D

That is because you are generally photography Prowlers out of the back of a 130; where opening the canopies might be problematic ;D
BTW, nice work Jay.

Thanks Harvey. Matt and I got lucky finding this Prowler resting in a hanger with the setting sun and partially closed hanger door working in our favor.

Chris, that is a very dynamic shot.
Wow, awesome shot, Chris! 👍
Thanks Matt and Scott that really means a lot!
WTI is underway here in Yuma! I've been away and not able to get to the airport except for a few minutes last week when these folks showed up!
This is mid-field Yuma, late afternoon, heading southwest, shot from my favorite little lump in the desert near the perimeter fence.
And, I've tried to share this shot here several times (as a few of you have already seen it elsewhere) but either something changed on Flickr, or something dropped out of my brain and I forgot how to share. I think it was a brain (software) malfunction...

Today the US Navy bids an official final farewell to the venerable Grumman EA-6B Prowler during today's EA-6B Prowler Sunset being held at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. The US Navy's retirement of the Prowler will leave the US Marine Corps as the only operator of the Prowler.

Incidentally, this is one of the two Prowlers that was inducted into AMARG yesterday.
Thanks guys. I know I've told the story to a few people, but there was so much dumb luck involved in getting this shot.
