Was he landing to the north or south? I've not been over there since they resurfaced the runway. I should really get back there for two reasons: flying and photographing.

He was on final for RWY 17. Stellar is a great little airport. Just wish they didn't have such a seige mentality.

EVS System?
Looks like you're right, Jay, if I understand your abbreviation correctly. I just got an answer to my question from a friend who is an aviation electronics expert and he says:
"That's a 'synthetic vision' sensor, otherwise known as an infra-red sensor, for making night / low-visibility approaches. Most Gulfstreams sold today have one, usually mounted along the centerline below the radome. They've been migrating down to less-expensive bizjets. That Citation's off-center mounting might not be the intended production config for that plane, or maybe it's mounted off-center so as to not intrude on the over-the-nose cockpit view."
Googling EVS shows several listings for STCs allowing retrofitting so I guess they have multiple mounting options.
IIRC, from the factory, it comes mounted under the nose.

I think that's the first Skycatcher I've seen "in the wild."
Looks like they definitely made some tweaks vis a vis the prototype that's been on the airshow / trade show circuit.
I'm guessing it's fun to fly but I wonder how it will perform in the higher density altitude situations around AZ in the Summer time?
This one is serial number 16200017 so presumably it's the 17th one built. It's based at DVT. I've seen it several times on the north runway, but that is too far away for me to get decent pictures. That runway is closed this week, so I was able to get shots of it taking off from the south runway.
The LSA category is hot these days, with more and more manufacturers getting on the band wagon,

They know how to paint a Cessna C-172 in Japan. Nice shots, James. One question, why don't they have Japanese registration numbers?
bill word
Because the Aero Club is an American entity operating on the base under the auspices of the 374th Force Support Squadron (Services Squadron).
James,
Those are wicked cool paint schemes! Wonder if any of those aircraft will ever find their way back to the US...
If you get a chance to button hole an Aero Club regular, I'd be really interested in a comparison between General Aviation rules & regs there versus here.
Also, does being a military pilot automatically qualify someone to check out in a 172 or do you have to do the regular private pilot training required (either ours or Japan's)?

On the surface it sounds very similar but they're tightly regulated on where they can fly. There's no "let's go shoot the approach at Haneda". My C-130 neighbor is multi-engine in many of the big boys but can't fly the C172s, not sure exactly what the procedure is. I'll ask, one of his boys and I are going to do the Sporty's PP course together.
Almost no GA scene over here, both because of cost and apparently some social aspects. Cost to get your ticket here is about $80,000.00 (yes 80 GRAND) and a single-engine Socata at the local Japanese field rents for about $500/hr vs. $95 for the C172. If a local wants to become a pilot, most will go to the States and live there long enough to accomplish it and still come out better cost-wise. When the Aero Club does cross country flights on arrival you'd think the space shuttle is landing, fences crammed with photographers.
Things are much different in Japan. ???

Something of a "Holy Grail" for us aviation shooters...
This is EAA "Photo 1" from where cometh the magic of Jim Koepnick and Bruce Moore.
The 2nd window on each side is optically flat glass (and either can be opened) but Jim's primary shooting location is an open luggage door on the left side of the aircraft.
The Cessna 210 makes a great shooting platform because it has no wing struts and it can scoot along pretty quickly when needed!
"Whence" might actually work better than "where." ;D
And damn, that's nice.
I thank thee good sir...

Has anybody ever seen a rig like the Cessna 210 has on it? There's a strange antenna on the tail and a pod on the belly. I'm wondering if the pod holds cameras.

The new St George Municipal Airport is "pilot controlled" and actually did not close for airshow activities until 11am each day.
So, while Osprey were arriving and the Blue Angels were doing engine run ups, civilian aircraft movements continued unabated each morning.
The only operational wrinkle was the fact that the normal transient ramp was taken up by chalet tents and the hot ramp so at least a few planes
that landed and turned off toward the normal FBO ramp, were rudely awakened and had to make judicious 180s to go to the other side of the field.

Love that name, "Businessliner". Nice shot. Cessna was capapble of producing some classy aircraft at one time. Seems that good industrial design is dying art with a few exceptions.
Thanks Scott. I agree, this is a classy aircraft. I believe the Businessliner was Cessna's last radial-engined general aviation aircraft.

Dig the interior shot. And I second Anna's comment.
Thanks very much...
Didn't have a whole lot of time, but I tried to maximize the opportunity. I have cabin shots as well but they'll have to wait for a bit as I have another project to tackle this week.

Tough call Anna but I tend to like the top one (Stearman diving) A little more dynamic and I like the three elements Stearman, Cessna, ground. I do like the tighter crop of the other photo though. That could be achieved on the top photo, not sure if it would be an improvement or not. Both are great shots.

Those are my thoughts as well Scott. A vertical orientation on the second shot may have yielded all the elements, both aircraft and the ground. Still learning to look at the entire image in the view finder, not get locked onto the main subject. I saw the possibilities of both aircraft with the Stearman diving in, missed what having the ground in frame would do for the image. :)

Over the last month or so I've been prepping from my ATP license so I've regrettably haven't had much of a chance to really look at the fine work everyone has been posting. Just some incredible shots from so many of you with the bar just getting set higher. During one of my training sorties I was asked at the last minute if I would take some AtoA of a CJ4(one I hope to start flying in the very near future). Without hesitation I said I would. Since the flight was originally a training flight I was unfortunately in the left seat to take the photos, so I was pretty restricted in camera movement. I had my check ride earlier today and passed so I'm one step closer to the CJ4, but now I have some more time to spend on AZAP. Here are two shots of the CJ4, I'm fairly pleased with these, considering my position in the aircraft and having to deal with engine cowlings, props, wing tips getting in the way, and having to shoot through the window. I'm going to start saving for some 2.8 glass now. I've estimated that about 95% of the time I shoot the light is horrible and dark with crap skies, the 100-400v1 just struggles in low light and the sharpness falls off.

Gorgeous Chris! The windows you were shooting through must be made out of special image sharpening glass!
Really like the banking-away shot. Looks like something you'd see in a Cessna ad.

Great images Chris.... Congratulations on your CJ4 check ride. Looking forward to seeing a selfie here with you flying the CJ4. :)
Thank you Scott, Joe, and Anna
I wish it was a CJ-4 type rating ride but it was just a standard ATP ride in a Seneca....I'll work on the selfie, be warned it might look like this.. In fact that's about what I looked like doing a single engine ILS in 100 degree temps yesterday. ;D

Great selfie!! Nothing like ATP work in a Seneca in the summer!! I did mine in San Antonio (Seneca II). Lose an engine departing and the good engine will let you select the crash site!! In fact, a buddy of mine did just that a few weeks prior to my check in a Seneca (long ago) - put it down in a field - he and the DPE walked away... Be careful out there!
