Title: Historical Photos
Post by: Matt Ottosen on June 24, 2015, 06:06:55 PM
This board is intended to be a repository for AzAP members to post historic aviation-related photographs that were taken prior to 1990. Photographs taken after 1990 (regardless of the age of the aircraft in the photograph) should be posted to the other appropriate boards in the forum.

Historical photos may be posted to multiple boards (i.e. here and within aircraft specific or airport specific threads).

This is from an upcoming article that I'm writing on a personal friend that I have known since I was a little kid, and is from the Major Paul Greer (Retired) Collection.
This photo was taken after a fuel divert that happened after their bomb run on their way back to England, during the divert they tangled with the Germans.

I was using a 1956 Kodak Retina IIc in 1976, working on the Van Nuys airport for American Jet.  Several of the Pregnant Guppies were there.  American Jet fabricated them, & so they collected there.  I remember climbing inside one of them & thinking that a basketball game could be played inside them.  I was sorry to see that they were in various states of disrepair.

Mercury S-1 White Racer

The Mercury S-1 racer was designed and flown by Harvey C. Mummert in 1931. He was Chief Engineer for the Aerial Service Corporation, Hammondsport, NY. He flew the S-1 at several air races in the 1930s. At the 1932 Chicago Air Races he placed third in the Free-For-All Edelweiss Trophy 25 Mile Race at the speed of 139.8 mph.

My father, Lawrence A. Wood, restored this airplane to an airworthy configuration and flew it once in the early 80's.  Our family donated the airplane to the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum for their Mercury Aircraft collection.

It has been ages since I visited the museum. On my list of things to do one fall color season soon.

From my dad's archives. A Hiller UH-12 preparing to depart the AZ Air Guard ramp and PHX. Taken in the very early 1960's.

Not a photograph, but a special letter my mom was kind enough to share with me regarding the death of my great uncle during WWII. Definitely proud of Uncle Sam's service to our country. He was part of the original "Flying Tigers" early in the war and was flying his beloved P-40 when he was killed in action.

The remains of a unknown allied bomber in Germany during WWII. This from my mom's uncle's collection of photos he found while he was in Germany with his Sherman tank division. They where professionally shot by a unknown German photographer. I'll post more soon.

The photo is of my uncle L J (Jack) Rhymes, on the left, who served in the US Army Air Corps during the late 20s to early 40s. The aircraft is seems to be a Curtiss A-3 Falcon. The photo was taken at Fort Crockett, Galveston TX home of the 3rd Attack Group

I'll throw this in.  I don't know what it is, or when it was taken.  My grandmother, who died in 1984 used a box camera.  This is one of about 500 negatives I have.  She lived on a farm most of her life, and was fascinated with the new, and with cities (30,000 was a metropolis to her).  Look down into the tiny lens, throw the lever, and take the picture.  It was taken somewhere in Ohio, and I would guess in the 1940s.

A Convair 880 at Gate 10, Terminal 1, at PHX on a cold and stormy November day in 1961.  According to the FAA registration records, this is serial number 002.  This particular Convair was taking my uncle to his new USAF assignment in Germany.  He was a navigator on a B-29 and their group got sent to Germany while Dad had to stay in Arizona.  Dad was not happy about missing going overseas, but he wished his brother well.  I apologize for the dirty negative.  It will take some serious scrubbing to get all the dirt off the emulsion.  I'll post a clean version after I had time to wash and rescan.

November 1, 1961 - Gate 10, Terminal One, Sky Harbor Airport - Pre TSA.  The family gathered to bid farewell to my uncle as he departed to his new USAF assignment in Germany.  I'm the young fellow in the light-colored clothing.  Yes sir, you used to be able to walk-up that close to departing/arriving aircraft.  Our cars were parked less than 50 yards from this location.  The good old days  ;)

December 1964 - Dad did some A2A work for the Army Guard at Papago. Even though he was USAF, one of Dad's hunting buddies was the CO at Papago. According to Dad's notes, these boys had just returned from a tour in Vietnam and wanted a few shots for their album. That is Roosevelt Lake in the background. He was shooting Tri-X 320 in his Graflex XLRF. Not bad for a medium format rangefinder. I proud to say, Dad was a darn good shooter  ;D

Thanks Harvey and Anna.  For those who may not know what a Graflex XLFR looks like, here is an example of what my Dad was using. It is a beast of a range finder camera, but once you got the hang of it, you could take some terrific photographs. Dad photographed most of my high school football games and track meets with one of these bad boys.

Jeff, Outstanding shot of the Bird Dog! I never realized just how high the pilot sits in the cockpit compared to other Cessnas. Suppose it makes sense for an observation aircraft. I was inspired by this to dig out a shot taken 20 years later at the Papago ANG base.  February 1984.

Thank you Scott.  Because of my father's relationship with the CO at Papago, I got to visit their ramp a few times.  Love your shot of the Cobras.  Nice touch with the Queen Air in the background.  I miss the fixed-wing aircraft that used to fly out of Papago on a regular basis.

Love that Cobra shot, Scott.  Around that same time I had visited Papago with my Indian Guides 'tribe' and remember my dad being very impressed with the fact that the film he was shooting and shutter speed he was using completely froze the rotors.  I should try and find some of those.

For captioning purposes, I'm pretty sure they were flying AH-1S model Cobras at that point, not Gs.  (Most S-models were converted from Gs and kept their original serials).

I finally made time and went through some more of Dad's negatives & slides. I found a few from one of the squadron's trips to Idaho. Dad called these trips "maneuvers". I think today they are probably referred to as "training DET's". What I really like about these slides is they show the squadron's F-86's with the "Copperhead" paint scheme I remember from my youth. Especially the barrel cactus on the tail. At the time, I thought these were the coolest looking jets in the world. Of course, when they transitioned to 104's I found a new favorite. Excuse the color shifts in these scans. I tried to quickly "white balance" them, but they are slowing shifting at different rates. The transparency film is called "Anscochrome" that I believe was made by Ansco out of New York.

Dad used to tell me that Barry Goldwater was in their squadron.  I never remembered seeing him at the base, so I always thought Dad was telling me stories.  I never did confirm one way or another, but here is a photo of Barry getting out of an F-86 from Dad's squadron.  Who knows, maybe Dad was right.

Anna:

I am glad you enjoy these elderly images.  I know my dad would be pleased.  Below is a photo of dad kneeling in front of a Bird Dog.  If memory serves me correctly, Dad set up this photo while on a sortie with the Papago ANG - circa 1964.  He told me that they would often land in the middle of nowhere and take a lunch break. The box I found this slide in said "somewhere near Sycamore Creek".  Dad is in the center kneeling.  Colonel Russ Hall is in the orange flight suit immediately in front of dad.  The white and orange Bird Dog was the Colonel's.  Dad was generally flying backseat to Colonel Hall.  I'm sure there are more of these types of photos in my cache of Dad's negatives/slides.

As an interesting side note, our mutual friend Scott Youmans has a photo on his Flickr page of the exact same Bird Dog - https://flic.kr/p/JW8xFa.  Small world...

This how you rescue your stranded old school dirt bike (i.e. "Blazer") when it breaks down far from any roads. You call your good friend who happens to be the CO of the AZANG at Papago.  Colonel Hall spools up one of his assets on the flight line, picks up dad at the house, (yes, he literally landed in the field behind our house) and helocasts him into the Sierra Ancha's to retrieve the stranded Blazer. Not a bad way to spend your Saturday.  Photo circa 1965...

My apologies if I've posted this somewhere on AzAP before.  I could not find it anywhere on the site, so I'm posting today.  Dad's squadron getting all fancy on a rainy morning at the ANG base at Sky Harbor.  In the 1960's the Copperheads were ready to intercept.  To help orient you to this location at PHX, the centerline of RWY 7R/25L would run right through the main hangar in this photo.  My dad's humble office and photolab was on the second floor of that hangar.  The 2000 aerial below shows the construction of 7R/25L and that old hangar before it was demolished.

While out at the Coolidge breakfast fly-in, I made the acquaintance of a gentleman (ex Army Vietnam pilot) that is on a quest to document the history of the Coolidge Army Airfield.  He has a hangar at Coolidge and we talked for about 30-minutes.  I took some photos of the display he had next to his airplane.  I've attached those photos below and also posted on the Coolidge thread.  Terrific stuff.

On 14 Sept 1957, an AD-5N Skyraider out of MCAS El Toro crashed at Sky Harbor on the old RWY 26L, which is now designated as RWY 25R.  My father was on duty at the time and took crash scene photos.  His notes to not indicate the cause of the crash; however, photo v.4 would seem to be taken precisely because it was a part of the puzzle.  His notes also do not indicate the extent of any injuries to the pilots. In image v.3, you can see the old ANG hangar and Terminal 1 tower in the background.  I believe Dad took these photos with his trusty USAF issued Graflex Speed Graphic 4x5 camera.

Thanks Harvey.  Unfortunately, this Sabre did not go to a museum.  According to the record, on 26 JAN 1951 this F-86 was flying from Larson AFB and suffered an engine failure.  It crashed belly landing at Luke AFB and ended up in a cotton field nearby.  You can see the two ANG hangers in the background of image #2.  Contrary to the name on the canopy, the pilot was Joseph M Williams, who survived.

Dad took the crash scene photos.  There was some damage on negatives v.1 and v.2 that will require further restoration.  Ansco SuperPan Press, Graflex Speed Graphic, Rodenstock Optar 135mm F/4 Lens, USAF KE-12

MANEUVERS - It is 1951 and dad's unit is going on "maneuvers". That is exactly the word that is written on the outside of the envelope wherein I found this negative. I don't know what that meant by the word "maneuvers" or where his unit was headed? No matter, I really like the look of this Delta DC-6.

COPPERHEADS FLIGHT OPS DESK - Luke AFB, Arizona

I am especially fond of dad's military photographs that have members of his squadron included.  Nice to see these faces.  This image is from 1951.

These two P-48B's represent the first production version of the Thunderjet - 5th & 53rd respectively.  During the Korean War, the Arizona ANG (197th Fighter Squadron) was federalized and assigned to the Air Training Command. ATC equipped the unit with the P-84B Thunderjet and used it as a training squadron (197th PTS).  In February 1951, dad took this photograph of two P-84B's that had been transferred to Luke AFB from other squadrons.

I'm not sure why dad choose to photograph these particular airframes?  Unfortunately, on 7 Aug 1951 s/n 45-59550 crashed while landing at Luke AFB and the pilot was killed.  Less than two months later, on 2 Nov 1951, s/n 45-59501 also crashed while landing at Luke AFB.  Pilot's status unknown.

Excellent photo and back story, even if it did have a tragic ending for both aircraft and crew. There has been a lot of sacrifices in aviation to get us to where we are today. God rest their souls.

10 JUN 1958 - Dad did some experimenting with infrared film when he photographed these two F-86L's on the ramp at Sky Harbor - you can see the old Terminal 1 tower in the background.  The primary effect was to turn the copper color banding on the nose white.  It also helped improve the sky contrast.  This is an 8x10 crop of a 6x6 negative.  I'm uncertain what camera dad used in making this image.

Several old 'Dogs' standing alert duty on the Sky Harbor National Guard ramp in 1959.  They look tired and were soon to be replaced with the Lockheed F-104.  As a side note, Sabre 53-0828 (third in line) was written off after a hard landing on 11 May 1960.  This is an 8x10 crop of a 6x6 negative.  I'm uncertain what camera dad used in making this image.

Thanks gentlemen.  Dad took this photo of his good friend Col. Russ Hall of the Arizona Army National Guard.  Col. Hall and dad were taking a break from flying to practice their pistol shooting skills.  Dad loved flying in the L-19's because they could land just about anywhere.  35mm Kodak Plux X Pan Film.  Camera/lens unknown.

ENLISTED MESS 1950 - Luke AFB. A spartan and completely utilitarian facility. From a military viewpoint, appropriate for those assigned to eat here. Not only did dad eat here often, but when his parents and brother were living on base, one of these tables is where they gathered for the evening family meal. As you might imagine, the officers dining would be considered elegant by comparison. A scan of that negative will come in the future.

In the Sky Harbor Sabers photo there's one in the far background along the fence with an interesting paint scheme.

Great photos of the F-86D Jeff. Your father didn't have problems with background clutter,
just a lonely DC-3 trying to photo bomb him. Are those rocket tubes under the belly?

Thanks Harvey. While dad could arrange some things on the ramp for photography purposes, he apparently could not make the DC-3 or power poles disappear ;)

Yes, it is my understanding that is the Mighty Mouse Folding-Fin Aerial Rocket (FFAR) tray extended. 24 rockets were carried instead of guns. Bro. Copalman informs that these were common on the D & L variants of the F-86.  "They were built to intercept large formations of Soviet bombers (that wound up not really existing)".

NORTHROP F-89B SCORPION - It is 1958 and dad was with his squadron TDY at Gowan Field in Boise, Idaho. At that time, the Idaho Air National Guard was flying F-89's. With my apologies to all the Scorpion fans out there, this airframe was never a favorite of mine. Nothing about it speaks "dynamic" to me. Clearly a purpose-built aircraft that no amount of lipstick can fix.

Thank you for the kind words Harvey. While it was a very long time ago, I remember walking on that ramp with my dad. I've got more than a few photos of me sitting on various wings. It is special for me to go through my father's negatives and slides. Tons of great memories and a little history to boot. Be well young man.

I think it is fair to say that the Idaho ANG at Gowan Field in Boise had an interesting ramp in 1956. Especially, when your roster of "alert birds" includes a B-47 Stratojet. Photograph by Dale Welker.

The defunct geo-tagging and photo sharing website Panoramio used to have a bunch of historic Arizona aviation photos uploaded by the user Dief. When Panoramio was shut down in January 2018 and all of it's data went with it, I downloaded the historic photos and I've decided to post them here so they can be seen again. All photos and titles are originally from the former Panoramio user Dief.
