This is not a very good photo due to the distance to the north runway, but I wanted to know if anybody could verify the identification. It is marked 160619 and he was using HX 619 as his radio code. I'm pretty sure it says HX-21 under the Marines on the tail boom. From what I have found on the web, this is Navy Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 21. However, that is based at PAX River in Maryland. Are they likely to have aircraft in this area? They landed briefly at a hospital near DVT and then did two low approaches there, so I assume they were doing a recon of the area. Any ideas what they might have been up to?

No idea what they're up to, but that FLIR turret looks a bit more robust than the standard BRITE Star fitted to the Ns and Ys.
Interestingly, Jack has some photos posted of the same aircraft, taken a year ago, and it was then assigned to HMLA-169. It has 10 painted on the door. In my photo it looks like you can see where they painted out the10.

This guy was doing constant practice landings on St. Joes heli-pad of which I work right across the street so what a kick in the pants I didnt bring my camera as I usually do, so after work I ran home grabbed my camera and waited on the top level of st joes parking lot waiting, but to avail I went in hunt of the beast, he had beeen approaching from the south so I headed to Sky Harbor and while on my over I saw him take off from somewhere inside Sky Harbor, I believe by Swift or Cutter but he swung around north then east when I got this shot from quite a distance and didnt see him again, if someone learns something please pass along especially if he's going back to st joes, that was a great photo opp :(

Chris,
That's a sweet looking shot. Framing on it is well balanced (did you crop at all?), and it has just enough rotor blur to indicate the helo is flying and not falling out of the sky. How did you set the exposure; manual or shutter priority?
- Dave
Thank you Dave, this was taken back in 2010 when I was just a step above shooting full auto so I believe it was set to shutter priority, I did crop it a bit to remove some sky above, I felt it was too much and there was some more open area in fron the the helicopter that made it feel unbalanced, thats about it though, I was happy with the results and im hoping to get back to Yuma this year to shoot this bird again before they have all been retired but im really glad you liked it too, means a lot coming from someone of your shooting ability :)

Agreed. Capable as the new Super-Duper Cobras/Vipers/Whatever are, they've got a bit of a geeky look to them. Whiskeys just look lethal, though I liked their lines better before they added those IR-suppressing exhaust stacks.

Looking Back
I really like this photograph Scott. IMO, it conveys a story of action; or at least causes the viewer to have questions. With the Marine looking behind the helo, it makes me wonder what he is looking at - a threat, another helo, etc. I actually like that you can't see his face. The anonymity leaves more to the imagination. Heck, you even caught a rotor blade swinging by - terrific.
Thank you Jeff. Most likely he was looking at a target we just shot at or the Cobra that was part of our Huey/Cobra team. Hopefully not my lens cap!

^^^^ I'll repeat what I said on your Flickr page; awesome photograph Joe. It reminds me of James Abbott Whistler's "Nocturne" paintings. Well seen.

That is some camo paint job Vance, a very cool capture, nice work.
Thanks Harvey. It had Special Ops logos all over it, but I didn't think the Army had any more Cobras in their inventory...but the Special Ops guys are...well...VERY Special:-) Thanks again Harvey

Holloman's last Huey, used by the Army for range support duties on the White Sands Missile Range, departs Holloman for its new owner in Louisiana. Kind of weird how this happened during the QF-4 'Phinal Phantoms' event, and there wasn't any notice of it or acknowledgement of it.
It's Saigon 1975 all over again Joe.
Very cool catch, Joe. The Holloman guys loved those Hueys and were fighting hard for years to not have to trade them in for Blackhawks. They used to pop into Raytheon at TIA with a Huey from time to time, so if you ever saw a Huey parked by the Raytheon hangar it was quite likely one of the White Sands birds.

It wouldn't be a trip back home to Arizona without some photography and AZAP posts :)
Last night I finally got to check a bucket-list item off and visit Kiwanis Park during WTI. It was great to get to meet a few more AZAP members and take in some solid rotary-winged action. A full set of photos from the evening can wait until a WTI 1-20 thread is opened (since as a Sponsored Member I cannot open one) but I wanted to throw this night shot of one of the participating UH-1Ys in here, as I was quite pleased with the result!
