Is there action on the weekends out at Yuma or is it mainly weekday stuff?
Weekdays. That's why the Harriers come to Willie on the weekends.
Where off base do you guys usually shoot from? I might be out that way the week after Christmas on a weekday. Would be nice to check it out and see what shots I can get.
There's a pretty decent guide to the shooting locations around Yuma on the scramble.nl website. Can't link directly to it, but you can access it from the following menu: http://www.scramble.nl/airports/index.html.
Stay away from spots 3 and 6 on the the map. I can't believe those idiots actually suggest that people hide from the MPs in the orange groves or that they access restricted areas. Ridiculous, and potentially damaging to local photographers.
The fairgrounds (spots 1 and 2) and spot 4 on the Scramble map are really the only good places to shoot from. You may still get a visit from the cops, but both the MCAS MPs and the Yuma PD are pretty cool and are just doing their due diligence when they check in on you. Standard admonition from them is to keep your lenses above the fenceline and not to take photos of their flightline, but with the fence in the way and passing traffic and heat haze and distance, there's really not a shot worth getting in that direction anyway.
Thanks for the info Joe. ;D

F-5N - June 2008 on our way back from Coronado. I was determined to show my wife and mother how cool (perhaps interesting would be a better choice of words) it was at the end of runway at MCAS Yuma. We had just missed some VMFT-401 F-5s departing so we waited about 45 minutes for them to come back. Actually for me it was about 45 minutes but for them it was more like 2 hours. But now they know how interesting it is. ;)

Apparently MCAS Yuma is on the hit list for the next round of base closings. I just read the following.
"Among top candidates for closure: The Army's Fort Detrick in Md.,
Fort Monroe in Va., Fort McCoy in Wis., Fort Lewis in Wash., Fort Leonard in Mo.
The Air Force's Cheyenne Mountain Air Station in Colo., Beale AFB in Calif.,
Joint Base Charleston in S.C. and McChord AFB in Wash. Also these Navy bases:
Naval Base Ventura County in Calif., Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Fla.,
Naval Air Station Fallon in Nev. as well as Naval Station Newport in R.I. And...
Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Ariz., Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point
in N.C., along with the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany in N.Y."
Bill Todd
Wow, what's the source on that Bill? With how close Yuma is to training ranges and how great the weather is for year-round training, I really can't see them being a viable candidate for closure.
The source is a newsletter I subscribe to, The Kiplinger Washington Letter. They have always been very accurate about things like that in the past. Of course DOD can still change the list since it has not been sent to congress yet.

My thoughts exactly. Poor decisions seem to be the name of the game. They are currently putting a lot of money into the base with facilities for the F-35B.
This is just speculation by a reporter. There isn't any list to be sent to Congress. The DoD is trying to get Congress to approve another BRAC process. Most people, including Kiplinger, don't think Congress will even consider that before 2014 or 2015. If a BRAC is authorized, the commission decides which bases are to be closed, based on requests from the DoD. The BRAC process was created to keep Congress out of the closing decisions. Once they approve the process there theoretically is nothing they can do about the final decisions. Before BRAC, each decision by the DoD to close bases was fought over in Congress and there were hardly any closed due to politics. BRAC has worked pretty well in the past.
Congressmen fight tooth and nail to keep bases in their districts from closing, due to the loss of jobs and money that occurs when they close. Recycling of closed military bases to civilian uses, in general, has not been very successful.
Chris is spot on about the process. I do, however, take exception to the comment that this is speculation by a reporter. It is the list that DOD currently plans to submit to BRAC when another commission is authorized. The Kiplinger Letter has been around for over 80 years and the reason they get accurate information from those in government is that they have never attributed anything they have published. The final decision still belongs to congress. What the BRAC process achieves is removing congressional authority over individual base closings. When BRAC submits the final list to congress congress must approve or disapprove the entire list without change. Chris is also correct that we are years from the actual closings and the list may change substantially before it is finalized.

Very nice Scott!
So, what am I missing here? F-35 is "Operational" as it's just entering High Alpha testing at Edwards?
I know there are different designations but one would think all aerodynamic testing would be done on the base airframe before calling anything good to go...?

Concurrency. The plan all along was to have the F-35 enter service as testing was still being done, but I don't think most folks expected it to hit line squadrons this immature. Notice it's landing conventionally in Scott's image. I think it will be a looooooooong time before F-35s are spoken of as being operational without having to use air quotes when you say the word "operational."
In the meantime, it's something new to point a lens at, so hooray for that.

For starters I won't pretend to have the level of expertise, albeit self-proclaimed (see the "about" link on his website), as the author of the article whose link can be found in Chris's post. Some of the risks he points out are probably valid. Having said that I don't get the sense that the Marine Corps is unaware of the developmental status of the aircraft nor is it trying to hide it. From what admittedly little I know the idea is to work out some of the usual logistics support, training, and other operationally related issues while, hopefully, the more technical aspects of the program proceed. By doing this in parallel rather than in series significant time can be saved. Has politics played a part and is there risk involved? Possibly, but what else is new. Go back in time and read about the development of nearly every major weapons system and you will find controversy. The bigger the program the more controversy. Some were very successful and some less so. With the F-35, only time will tell. As Joe pointed out we have something new to point our lenses at. I'd prefer to help try and make it work rather than to stand on the sidelines bashing something based on a collection of news clips. The only way to prove it can't be done is to try to make it happen.
By the way Chris, this not directed at you! Thanks for posting the link.
Here is a somewhat less negative article from Reuters via Aviation Week. It says the Marines don't expect the aircraft to be truly operational until 2015. One of the major sticking points is the software.
The comment is kind of interesting.

I attended the roll-out of the F-15 at Luke AFB in the mid-seventies. President Gerald Ford was there along with two F-15s. Both were unable to fly due to mechanical issues.
As a point of interest, one of the two Eagles was TAC 1 that is now on display at Luke.
Another sideline. The F/A-18 had major issues during it's development and looked like it was going to be a major flop. There are still complaints about it in regard to range and endurance. The F-16 was supposed to be a cheap lightweight fighter. Anyone checked the sticker price lately? I will say this, it's a lot less than an F-35!
I'd like to see the Marines buy a bunch of new and improved Skyhawks and AV-8Bs or maybe some A-10s but that's just me! I don't see that happening.
Kind of reminds me of how I perceive camera body prices. I used to think a thousand dollars was an outrageous amount to pay for a film body. Now it seems that $3,500 is quite reasonable compared to the $6,000 plus professional bodies. Progress!

I was on the west side of the base with a super eight movie camera the day that the first F-15s arrived. A TWA 707 was chartered to bring VIPs to the event and Air Force One brought Gerald Ford. I have the video posted on YouTube

Technically not an aviation shot, but worth sharing. This is Joe "Tiger" Patrick II. Tiger is an Army vet with a combat tour in Desert Storm. He is currently walking across the US, from San Diego to Washington, DC with a gigantic banner showing the faces of nearly all of the 6,000+ American servicemembers killed since September 2001. It was very humbling and overwhelming to see so many faces, and uplifting in a way to see them honored in such a manner, especially for those with personal connections to the fallen.
https://www.facebook.com/FacesOfOurFallen for anyone interested in following Tiger's journey.
Thanks for sharing this story and photo Joe. I wish him a safe journey to complete his mission.

Scott, I must say that I am a - ahem - big fan of this uplifting image.
Seriously terrific detail given the distance and the heat-haze.
Thanks Joe! That was taken with my alternate (to 100-400mm) lens combo consisting of a 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII and Canon 2x extender mounted on a 1D Mark IV. Not exactly a candidate for a 20 x 30 blowup but I'm surprised it was even usable. I'll credit Ned for tipping me off on that lens combo. The newest 2x is a cut above any others I've ever used, at least on that lens.
Speaking of fans, that things absorbs something close to 30,000 HP!

Jay, Interesting point. I'd like to know what the relationship is between the position of the fan inlet door and the airspeed as the aircraft transitions from vertical or slow speed flight using vectored thrust and the fan to wingborn flight. I don't imagine they can keep that door fully open at over 150 to 200 kts or so. At 200 kts it should be able to fly on the wing alone at any weight. I wonder if it begins to close as forward airspeed increases. Something to look into.

+1 - Very, very cool. You really nailed it with this image Scott. Glorious background and the helo appears to be tack sharp nose to tail. The lighting isn't bad either ;)
Thanks Jeff! I had wanted to take a shot like that ever since I was a teenager. Just switch out the HH-1N with an OV-10A from VMO-2 or VAL-4 and that would have been my dream shot. In reality the brightly colored Huey probably looks better over the sand.
Scott, it it everything everyone has already said, but the fact that it has your initials on the tail truly blows my mind! 🌋
Scott, you already know that's one of my favorites, but an OV would be truly divine.
Thanks Matt and Joe! Yeah, I was a couple of decades too late for the OV-10. If I had know better way back when I probably could have done it. Oh well!

Thank you Anna! It was 113 degrees that day and humid. Thunderstorms were forming to the west, north, and east. I was concerned that the storms over the mountains to the west would block the sun but it all worked out.

WOW Scott! Not sure how you orchestrated this composition, but I'm in awe. Absolutely excellent sir.
Thanks Harvey and Jeff! I can tell you that hours of planning and 3 dimensional geometric calculations based on sun angle, wind drift, bank angle and turn rate had nothing to do with the composition. I like to call it dumb luck.

Thanks Jay! You should absolutely feel good about your images from Texas, they are over the top! I was going to comment that you've raised the bar so high I'll have to settle for creating second rate photos from now on. The warbirds have so much character and your capture and post processing skills have combined to create aviation images that are quite clearly among the very best.

Thanks y'all! I didn't like my normal crop, so I went with something a little different.

Technically not Yuma, but it was out on the ranges. Shot almost two years ago for an article that just got published in the September 2016 issue of AFM. Only had about five minutes total with this bird, as the Marines who had just recovered it were eager to get it into the 'hangar' (a large-ish tent open on all sides) to get it turned around for another flight. Not the best exposure of the three I got from this angle, but it was fairly windy out there, so the wingtips in the other two were blurry messes. Pretty much owe being able to get this shot in the very short window I had to all the night shoots at PASM.
WEATHERED WARRIOR
Seems like just yesterday the Marines started painting Harriers in this dark gray paint scheme, so it's weird seeing one look all weathered and faded.

This area north of Yuma and west of the Colorado River is mindblowing. It looks a lot like the landscape Matt Damon's character had to traverse in the movie The Martian - almost completely devoid of vegetation (little bit of Where's Waldo involved to find it in this shot) and just jagged as hell.

The morning after our most recent El Centro photo call, Matt and I decided to do some fishing at the fairgrounds in Yuma. We got lucky with a single flight of four F-35's coming in to land. Due to the Marine Ball or some event similar all other air activity was grounded. Quite a catch for the day though!
