The long-rumored An-124 finally showed up at Willie today. Really could not have asked for a better approach, just wish the heat haze wasn't so bad.

It was good to finally see her show up at Willie, and fly a picture perfect approach.

Got one about 3 years ago, it was parked by the terminal area by the parking area. It was dropping off Isreali Apaches to be refurbished by Boeing.

I have no idea what heat haze Joe was referring to...
Full of pineapples and headed for Eastern Europe, stopping at Lajes Field for a ga-zillion pounds of fuel.

Nice, very nice!
An-124 departure yesterday from Willy.
...ufff...super!
Same angle - same location - same plane - just a little farther along in its departure climb.

Well done, James. There is no good place for departure shots at DM. Wish I could have made. Many thanks to Jack for telling us about this opportunity.
Yep, many thanks! I'm beginning to think of Tucson as the "departure pit of despair".
As you drive into the Pima Museum, there is a hill on the left that you can make a left 180 off the driveway and park near. I've noticed (unfortunately sans long lens) that standing atop that can give you a fighting chance at a decent side shot of larger aircraft departing toward the southeast. Just missed a BOne last time I was down there. :(
Smaller stuff just rotates too soon and is too high by that point.
I noticed that today as I was there. Might have to make use of it if there's another heavy anytime soon.
Came in to Willie today.
Nice catch. I hope to get it on departure if it leaves saturday or sunday.
Big Rus' at Gateway.

Flew a right-base like he was landing on 12 (with a couple of s-turns thrown in) then a high pass overhead and a 180 turn to finally land on 30. WTH?!?!?!?!?!?!

Couple years ago I was watching arrivals for the DM airshow. There was a B-1 doing circuits around the city looking as though it would land on 12. All of a sudden 4 A-10's took off from 30 and it looked as though the B-1 was going to land the same way. So we all rushed to the other end of the runway and got there just in time to watch the B-1 land on 12... so I know your frustration.

Nice with dramatic clouds in background.
So apparently these guys make somewhat frequent trips to DM ,my question is that what would be so big that would need a An-124 to deliver it and that since it is going to a military base why not use a C-5 or C-17 ,if anyone happens to know or have an idea id like to hear
Helos, personnel, ground support equipment, cargo, aircraft parts (remember, AMARG is right there and they might be on a parts run for a foreign air arm). Even if it is supporting USAF operations, other assets might be tied up with operational, training, and maintenance commitments.
Also foreign operators will use them to ferry their equipment to/from DM to attend Red Flag/Goldwater/etc. It's very interesting to watch them fly from the UK to here to Winnipeg, back to UK and on and on. I'd hazard a guess that they're here almost monthly.

Thanks. I parked on Pecos for the approach to 30L. It looks like it stopped pretty quickly. Did it reach the Gazebo? There were several photographers on Taxiway Circle when it parked.
It turned off at the same ramp entrance that most of the transient military uses. Light was still awful if you were facing even a single degree south of east. Guess I can always tell people I was there... :-\
Could be Saturday or Sunday according to a little "Jack Bird" ;D

Thanks. The customer is the Royal Saudi Land Forces. They are buying 24 Apaches, so the Antonov will very likely be back for more.

Any idea how long the Antonov is going to be here?
- Rob
Last time it departed late afternoon the following day. Its flight plan has not yet been filed.
I got a real dumb question, On the side of the aircraft it show AH-124-100 but we call it an AN-124. If you goolge them both you get the same aircraft. So is it an AH-124 or an AN-124?
In the Cyrillinc alphabet our N looks like an H.
You leard something new every day. Thanks
