Arizona (From Sea to Shining Sea) (Second Edition)

It's not a photo of an airplane, but it is aviation related.
I was hired by Scholastic Publishing to take this photo as an update for the Second Edition of their Arizona (From Sea to Shining Sea) children's book.

Again, it's not a photo of an airplane, but it is aviation related (how it was taken and the book it is in).
This was taken on a Southwest Airlines flight from Sea-Tac to Sky Harbor as we were passing through 18,000'. I had asked the Captain which side Mt. Rainier would be on as we departed out of Seattle, and I made sure I had a seat for the view.
This photo has a few other credits as well:
- Displayed in We Are All Photographers Now! at the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland.
- 2008 Arizona State Fair - Honorable Mention
- Licensed with Getty Images
That's a pretty cool shot, especially given it's taken through a airliners window.
One month after the events of Sept. 11th 2001, I was on a similar Southwest flight from Sea-Tac to Phx. After a normal take off and climbout, the pilot announced he would be making a scenic deviation. He then pulled back the power and dove for Mt. Rainier. We leveled off well below the summit of the mountain and did a full circle around the mountain about 1/4 of a mile from the snow covered slopes. After a circle of the mountain the captain climbed away from the mountain and resumed the normal profile. Very Cool! A few weeks later I spoke to a pilot with Alaskan who said that deviation can be approved by ATC as a "mountain tour".
Self-portrait published by the Guardian UK earlier this year in the book "A Message to Obama."

Obviously not aviation-related.

BBBWWWAAHHHAAAHHHAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am quite proud to announce that my book Aviation Photography: A Pictorial Guide is now available for purchase! Over a year in the making, it is filled with images taken from Alaska to Arizona, California to England and many places in-between. Full-color throughout, it is a great introduction to photographing aircraft as well as figuring out where they are (or will be), selecting equipment to take on your aviation excursions as well as strategies on figuring out which aircraft you just photographed. Our own Chris Heising is on the cover, Bill McCarroll's in the flight line etiquette section and Joe Copalman was kind enough to concoct a bunch of lies about me for the forward. Many of the images inside were obtained because of my involvement with the AzAP group of which I am quite proud to be called a member.

I was very easy. Now I've just got to get James to autograph it for me. That may be difficult with him being gone on the book tour and doing "Live with Regis & Kelly" ;D
Lol... I could stand Regis but that girl... no thanks. ;D
These pictures of NL9G will appear in an upcoming Squadron Publications book about the Grumman F8F Bearcat.

Good job, Brian!
Good job!!
Congratulations Brian.
Thanks guys!
Great shots of the Bearcat. Congratulations on the selection.
This is old news, just realized I never posted anything about it.
Two of my A-4 shots were published in Tommy Thomason's phenomenal book Scooter: The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk Story. The A-4 has long been one of my favorite aircraft, and Tommy does an outstanding job of presenting pretty much a complete history of the type. For as much as I thought I knew about the Skyhawk, I actually learned quite a bit from this book. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the A-4. http://www.amazon.com/Scooter-The-Douglas-Skyhawk-Story/dp/0859791602/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344023549&sr=8-1&keywords=scooter+a-4+skyhawk (http://www.amazon.com/Scooter-The-Douglas-Skyhawk-Story/dp/0859791602/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344023549&sr=8-1&keywords=scooter+a-4+skyhawk)
My two shots are in the chapter on civilian operators, and show an ATAC-marked A-4N at Willie and one of ATSI's TA-4s on final at Willie:

Well done by all. This is a very nice recognition of your good work. Enjoy viewing all your photos.
The second edition of Hawks in Flight has just been released. I am one of the 4 principal photographers and 66 of my flying raptor images are included in this new field guide.

Very well done Ned. Congrats all around for a tremendous accomplishment.
Thanks Jeff. It was a lot of fun working on this project for the past few years.
Ned, Where can I purchase this book? Does it cover only hawks? I see these incredible creatures flying around but never know exactly what they are. Lots of variations! Looking forward to seeing your fine work in print.
Congrats Ned. Well deserved honor for your excellent hawk photos.

Scott: Amazon.com if the best place to buy it. Just be sure your getting the second edition. It covers all the raptors of North America.

Congrats, Jay! That actually looks really good. Think I'll be putting that on the wishlist for the holidays this year.
Phelps and the publisher did the smart thing including you on this project. Well done Jay. Like Joe, I'll be looking for this bad boy come the holidays. Of course, I'd like mine signed - hint, hint, hint ;)
That's awesome, Jay, congrats!! Will there be an AzAP discount? ;)

The above photo was selected for the cover of the Yellowbook - Phoenix Greater West Valley, Arizona. Don't know if this qualifies as a book, but I thought it was cool to have one of my photos selected for the cover.
Congratulations Vance....
Nice work Vance, well deserved young man.
