I'll second Joe's thanks to the crew at NAF El Centro and everyone else responsible for Thursday. Being a newbie I have to say an El Centro photocall definitely exceeds the hype and expectations!

Funny you mention the red light. In the morning, on the other side of the fence, one of the SoCal guys was lamenting the fact that he could never get the lights on. I must have a dozen shots with the lights on. ;D

Continuing the discussion on Jeff Welker's point about pre-visualization - this is one of the few shots I actually set out to get on this trip - an F-18 burner departure with the aircraft straddling the arresting cable. I had tried it on previous trips, but it's actually pretty hard to get as it happens quickly, and usually there is so much cooked air between me and the aircraft at that point that even if I got the shot, it's difficult to make it out. Got lucky with a few on this trip, and this one was the best.

Did you guys see any of the weird "pinching" effect this time under the wing on takeoff? I've tried to see if I caught it in any other images but so far only at EC. I think I remember seeing it on Bill's video footage but can't locate my copy.

It seemed to happen pretty far down the runway this time, always past the cables. I have quite a few shots of it this time around, but usually with someone's head in the frame just to the left of it. I'll go through my shots again and see if I got a good one.

Thanks Scott. I've been trying to find my happy place with LR3 and CS5 for the past several months. I feel like I'm inching closer to the level of competency that I've been hoping to achieve with my post processing. It is satisfying to know that others think things are improving. :)

Thanks Vance for the kind words. Without going into each individual image and the specific treatments used, suffice it to say I enjoy using Nik Software's suite of plug-ins with LR3 and CS5. Generally, I like to emphasize detail and structure in images to give them a "gritty" realism. However, I don't always use that method. I have a vision in my head of each image and use my software tools to get the final photo on my monitor as close to what's in my head as possible. I'd be happy to discuss my techniques in greater detail via email/pm if you like. I just don't want to bury this thread with the tedious details.

2:1 works well Jeff. I find that airplanes often work better in wider formats. That's one good thing about the 3:2 format of our cameras. Higher aspect ratio than many other film or sensor formats.
