Yes, there is a hatch/door on the right side.

Don't ask me why they were taxiing with the ladder installed.

Here's a wartime photo of a B-29 and the roundel on the left is further forward than Fifi's. There may have been variations.

I'll try my hand at this, though it's nearing overkill

The Legend of the Guardian of the Line
The Greek God "Linus" comes from the Greek name Λινος (Linos) meaning "leg."
In Greek legend, he was the son of the God Apollo who was accidentally killed when he stepped over the white line.

Probably expedites egress for the folks in back in case of an emergency...

Is that a ladder or the propeller blades on the starboard engines that can be seen just below the fuselage?

On Friday, April 8th, Boeing B-29 NX529B "FIFI" diverted to Tucson due to bad weather enroute to Bull Head City.
I was able to talk one of the ground crew at the GA ramp into escorting me in for a few photos. It was 6pm and the
airplane was already buttoned up. He gave me 5 minutes and I was in and out in 4. (I didn't want to press my luck)

I took some perspective shots just before sun down. Here are a couple.

Nice you could get in and out like that Chuck. I like that up-tail image.
