Y'all are way into the math here...

I just used 1/slow and hoped to get something.   ;D

I guess now I know to use 1/slower...

Jay, more often than not I "wing it" when it comes to these matters. I had one occasion where I was going to shoot an Osprey and figured it would be interesting to know what the magic shutter speed would is.  In the case of your excellent shot that kicked off this conversation, I'm not sure more of a disk would necessarily have looked better.  I shot one in near darkness once where the disk was in fact 360° and you could hardly see the blades at all against the dark background.  It looked like it had no rotors at all which really didn't cut it.  The background on your shot would have been more conducive to a nice full and visible disk but I like it with the amount it has.

I finally got a good shot of an Osprey.

Osprey at Willie a few weeks ago, will have to try a longer shutter speed next time.

The very clever "007" bird from the Sea Elks at Willy...

Wow.  On that second one, was that moving parallel to you, or was that a hard break behind you after coming off the hose?
