The Nellis Air Show 2010 is comming up on 13-14 Nov. 2010.
I'm not going to make it, but my Parents gave me some info.if any one is thinking about it.
There is a Travel agent in Sun City called Promenade that is planning a trip that includes Transportation to and from Sun City, AZ (99th Ave and Bell Rd.) Two nights, 3 Buffet meal Vouchers,Transportation to and from Nellis. For $199.00,  623-977-8800  www.ptaz.com
My parents have used them many, many times and say there are first rate.  Just try to save anyone the pain of having to drive up there and burn your own gas and what not.
"You don't become a professional simply by earning certificates, adding ratings, or getting a paycheck for flying. Rather, professionalism is a mindset. It comes from having the attitude, the ethics, and the discipline to do the right thing — every time, all the time, regardless of who's watching."

STS-133 launches Nov 1 on an 11 day mission, what are the chances bad weather will force an Edwards landing on the 13th? THAT would be a true Vegas jackpot !

I just received a report from the Nellis show that security decided to prohibit lenses longer than 300 mm on Sunday:

First day there (sat) was fine.  A bit crowded, and I could have done better on some shots - but I had the next day to make it up, right?

WRONG!  When I got there Sunday, they wouldn't let me in with the 150-500mm lens.  Said it was base commander's decision, that anything over 300mm wouldn't be permitted in due to security reasons.

Well, that's just ridiculous.  It was NOT posted on their web site (still is not).  And it really made me mad to waste my time and money to get there only to be turned away for some hokey unwritten policy.

Sure, if you had a media pass (which I did not apply for this year), they'd let you in.  Where's the logic in that??  Media pass is freely given to foreign journalists!   They're they ones likely more interested in whatever they're trying to protect - which I have no idea what.

Can't be the base - you have google earth view of the whole facility.

Must be planes.  Of which, the only one of note is the F-22 Raptor.

I had heard instances where security wouldn't let people take pics of the front of the parked F-22, as the inlet design is supposed to be some kind of secret. That's why they're usually parked with covers on the inlet opening when on display. Well then, why did they parade the plane 50 ft in front of the crowd line after the demo???  You don't need a 500mm lens to get a detailed view, any point and shoot camera will do!

The 300mm limit was also a bit on the vague side.  Was it 300mm AND above, or just more than 300mm...  Lots of kit lenses come in 300mm size, so they'll be turning away lots of people if it included it.

I say it was a public relations disaster.  They work so hard to promote the image of the Air Force by putting on the show, just to blow it on something like this.

Do they really think I won't be bitter and view them negatively after this?  Maybe I'll sing the praises of what a wise and insightful leader they have as base commander.  I don't think so.

1) if they're so worried about someone seeing the plane, don't show it.
2) if they want to restrict any item (as is their right), they should post it well in advance.
3) hundreds of people already went in Sat with big lenses.  It's pointless to enforce such a restriction the very next day.

Tried also to talk to the PAO about it, but they were only following orders, and don't shoot the messenger business.   No way to get a media pass for that same day either - without going on base, and I couldn't get on base with my big lens.

So that's my little rant on that.  I could have gone back with a 2 hour turnaround with my other 70-300mm lens (which I left at my Mom's place), but like I said - wasn't even sure if it was restricted.  By that time, I was just saying f*** it.

Wow thats amazing to think that it has come to this.........................

I'm really curious what the chain of events was to get the commander to declare that 300mm was the limit.
"I'm sorry sir, you can't take photos of that aircraft."

"If you've seen my work, you'd know I really can't take photos of any aircraft."

Wow, airshow madness again. I laughed when I heard the "no lawn chairs" statement at DM and then saw them all over the place as people brought them in.

No idea what that nonsense is about, especially if you're like many of us and carry teleconverters in your bag.
