My its a sad day here in my office. Was going to go spotting after work today and took my back pack in from the truck and I guess my wife was in the bag to get my P&S Fuji and didn't zip it all the way and not checking this I slung the back pack over my shoulder and bag my 55-200mm lens(Nikon) took about 1 1-2 foot drop on the floor. The glass was unharmed but now it seems the Af is not working at all. I hold the button down and can here the AF trying to work and it doesn't. I know that its not the best lens but for now all I have left is the 18-55mm so i am really sad. And its my fault for not checking the back pack before putting it on. Is it cheaper to fix our save to buy new lens?

Thanks

Jason

I know I had focus problems with my Canon 100-400mm(not dropped) and they charged me $168 to fix and tweak....Call and see what they say.  Good luck.  I dropped my Tokina 12-24 :-( and it broke in half at the Edwards AFB media day.  Also cracked my 40D case but it works fine.....

Remind me to avoid shooting near you next time...   ;D

FWIW, I think I ended up paying about the same to have the tension clutch in my 100-400 replaced a couple years ago.

<Knock Wood> I've not ever actually dropped anything yet however.

Its weird it sounds like the focusing ring makes a click when it goes to about 105mm not sure what to do. This sucks

ok looks like I am sending it off. Looks like its going to be a get as close to the A/c kinda month.  :(

Hopefully Matt will join this discussion, as he actually sent a lens in to Nikon for some type of repair and they refused to repair it under warranty, claiming the damage was impact-related (it wasn't).

Might be worth taking to Tempe Camera to have them take a look.

Well I figured it would not be covered under warranty since my dumb butt didn't check to make sure the bag was secured. Note to self if wife ir kids touches bag double check there actions.

Don't forget Photomark as a possible repair alternative as well.

IIRC, Tempe Camera had to order parts from Canon for my 1-4 repair so in essence, it went back to Canon anyways.

well I just talked to both companies Tempe Camera and Photomark and they both said same thing for being a impact repair they have to send it off to Nikon and it a 4week turn around and will cost +/- 150.00 and this lens is only 190.00 bran new. Cheap lens. I might just buy new lens but upgrade. Not sure but this still sucks.

Isn't Joe Kates getting rid of his Nikon gear?  That may have been a while ago, but it might be worth talking to him about it.  He also tends to find good deals on good gear and might be able to point you in the right direction.

I took my lens to C.R.I.S., and they sent it off to Nikon.  Nikon reported it as impact damage because my filter ring was bent (they couldn't prove anything wrong with the lens itself).  They refused to repair it under the warranty, and voided the warranty due to the "impact" (impact does void Nikon's warranty).  Since C.R.I.S. hadn't marked the impact damage box when I dropped it off with them they were willing to pay the $130 +/- to repair it for me, but I wasn't allowed to ever bring that lens back to them.  The lens broke again about six months later and I just bought a new one.  It was also my 55-200mm lens.

C.R.I.S. is good, and they are a certified Nikon repair facility.

Well update. Nikon got my lens yesturday and they are fixing the lens at no charge. So thank you baby jesus. Not sure when it will come back to me but Joe is loaning me his lens till it comes back.

Think it's salvageable?

Anna M. Wood

I suspect it is fixable.  Just depends on how much it will cost compared to what the lens is worth new.

Best to head to Tempe Camera and have them take a look.  Likely they will send it into Nikon for an evaluation of the repair.
