Resolution for posting

Hi everyone,

Forgive me if this has been posted before, but I was hoping you all could help me. I've noticed that when I post/upload to Flickr, I notice a lot of noise/grain in my images, even when shooting on low ISOs. Example: [/url]THAT NEW JET SMELL by Thomas Backus, on Flickr[/img]

The sky looks fine, but the fuselage and the nose of the jet look very noisy/grainy to me. Is this a resolution issue or a noise reduction issue in Photoshop?

How are you processing your shots?
What are the dimensions and resolution of the export?

I post process in Photoshop Elements/Google Nik using detail extractor/haze removal and graduated neutral density. Exported resolution is 300 DPI, 5184x3456.

You're feeding the web way, way too much data and probably suffering compression issues.

Unless you're offering the file for download to be printed, you really only need to be between 1200 and 1800 on the long side at 72 or 96 dpi depending on your monitor.

Everything Jay said, plus a question - are you adding any sharpening in post-processing?  The first thing that hits me when I look at this is that is that it looks like you're doing global sharpening rather than just selecting the aircraft itself. 

There are also a few tricks out there for combating noise, like bumping your exposure compensation to the right a smidge, as lightening a slightly underexposed image will introduce more noise than going in the opposite direction with a slightly over-exposed shot.

We also assume you are shooting RAW and not JPEG....   

I usually export 2048 on the long side....  Somewhere along the line I have heard that is a good size for Facebook.  Not sure if that is still true.

Also consider a 16:9 crop.  Works well for screens.  Less blue sky top and bottom will showcase your subject better.
