Dale Earhnardt Jr. arriving at GYR for the NASCAR test at PIR. Unfortunately, it was pretty cloudy.

Hey Chris:

I've never shot at the Goodyear airport before. Just in case I find myself on that side of the tracks sometime, what is the access like for photography?

Thanks;

The few times I went out there previously I shot from in front of the small terminal building. They normally let you go out there, if you ask, as long as you don't leave the sidewalk. There's no fence and there's a cover to get out of the sun. However, today they wouldn't let me out there because of the "special event." I had to shoot through the barred fence next to the building. I'll probably be going down there again next month to get arrivals for the race and hopefully then I'll be able to talk my way out to the front of the terminal.

Shooting from there is kind of hit or miss. As long as they are landing to the south, you can usually get pretty good landing shots. However, that only works until early afternoon because of the sun angle. I haven't actually scouted out any good place to shoot later or if they are landing the other way. Maybe somebody else can suggest a place.

There isn't a heck of a lot of activity there normally, other than two large flight schools, one of which trains for Lufthansa. Lots of Bonanzas and Pipers. There are a bunch of old airliners stored there, including a DC-7 that has been there for 35 years, but they're not easy to get good shots of.
