I picked up the new Canon 100-400 today. Wish I had it last week, but at least it's in my hands now. This thing focuses very fast compared to any other lens I have. I like that. I've not actually taken a shot yet. Hopefully I'll get out tomorrow and break it in.

I also picked up a new gear pack. The Lowepro Pro Trrekker 400. Holy crap, is this thing nice, and loaded with features. I think I'll still be finding new stash pockets on it a year from now.  ;D

Congrats!! Loving mine!! It is super fast and stable! What body are you gonna use it on Scott? Ned mentioned vignetting at 400mm on his 5d MkIII. I've been running the MkII lens on the 7d MkII and have had no issues at any extreme. I tested the MkII lens on the 6d and had significant vignetting at 400mm from f5.6 through about f11. So, it appears there's vignetting when used with full frame bodies. I have not yet seen (or researched or updated lately) a lens correction profile in Lightroom for the 100-400 MkII but have had very good results with other corrective profiles for other lenses - maybe it will become a one click fix?

I'll be using this on my 7D and 5D Mark 3.

I'll get out today hopefully, and put it through some drills.

The new lens seems nice.

The vignetting mentioned is a reality for me as well. I have to do some playing around to see when it is happening.

Here's a hand held shot at 400mm cropped. Shutter speed was 1/200th. Seems like the IS does a decent job.

What I love best about this is the additional range I get. My 400 prime is a fine lens, but I love not being locked in to that one focal length.

After checking my shots and the data on them, the vignetting seems to occur on my 5D Mk3 at around 300-400mm, and F/5.6.

On the 7D, there may be a very slight hint of vignetting at the same settings, but I think it's more in my imagination from looking at so many shots this evening.

If you have Lightroom Scott, the Lens Correction check box should remove the vignetting if it's an issue for you...

I'm using Aperture 3.0, which also has a magic button, and Poof! It's gone.

The MkII profile has not been added to Lightroom yet. But the MkI profile works fine in removing vignetting.
