Thinking of purchasing a somewhat sturdier tripod for use with lenses along the lines of the Canon 500mm f/4L IS.  Leaning toward flip lock rather than the twist type leg securing devices but that's not an absolute.  Carbon for weight reasons.  Anybody have one they really like that fits this general description? Thanks.

I have a Gitzo 3531 that has twist lock legs.  Carbon and does a great job.  Put an RRS BH55+ ballhead on top and its rock solid

Scott,

I've had my Manfrotto for so long, I don't know the part/model number.  It's aluminum, has flip locks, so could either be a 55 series or a 190 series.  Even though it's aluminum, I don't think it's too heavy, especially when comparing to a 500mm Canon/cannon barrel.  One trick I learned for carrying it: I bought yoga mat strap (has velcro wraps at both ends) and attach it to the tripod to create a nice shoulder sling.

I'm interested in what kind of head you go with.  Although quick to lock/unlock, I'm not a big fan of the ballhead that I have.  For my tastes, it flops to the side too easily when loosened, but I'm hesitant to spend the $$ to get a sturdier solution.
