I've had my 100-400L since about 2006 and I'm thinking it's time to send it in and have it looked at and cleaned up. I had a heck of a time with the autofocus today but half of me thinks it was because of the conditions. Grey sky, fast moving and or constantly moving dark subject(Harris Hawks). How long does it usually take to have work done on a lens and where does it usually go? Canon service center here in the states or over seas?

Chris, fortunately it has been a while since I had to have any Canon products serviced but I seem to recall it took about three weeks and the service center was in California.  The contact info should be in the paperwork that came with the lens if you still have it. If not let me know and I'll look it up when I get home.  I think Tempe Camera is an authorized service center. That might be an option but Canon should certainly know what they're doing. I have had good luck with Tempe Camera too.

Chris, I had my 100-400 repaired at Tempe camera about a year ago. The tightening ring wore out due to my keeping tension and still making adjustments back and forth. I learned my lesson, $250.00 repair. They did it in house in about 10 days. Works like new, lesson learned.

Hey Gang,
Thanks for the replies and info. I sent the lens off the other day to the Irvine factory. I received an e-mail today saying they received it just about the time I was flying over Irvine..LOL. Had I known I was going to be in CA yesterday I would have dropped it off and saved some money.. Oh well..
