Has anybody tried this app? You buy a dongle for about 30 bucks and then you can trigger your camera with your phone. There are several different ways to trigger, like time lapse. The app is free, iOS or Android. The iOS versions seems to have some additional options.

I have it for Android.  I have used Time Lapse quite effectively, and tried Distance Lapse.  Distance Lapse is only good when you have a quality/constant GPS signal.
