Typically not something I nerd out on, as I'm not really a "spotter" type, but I just noticed that two of the Test Center birds that went up on Tuesday morning were sister ships - 86-0211 (Ned's shot) and 86-0212 (my shot).

I'd have to call seeing the Pod "eye" a malfunction of some kind.

Really rare/odd to see one uncovered in the pattern.

I'll have to poke around on my TIA shots, but I'm pretty sure it's not all that uncommon.  I've seen unmasked pods on Vipers out at Luke and Harriers at Willie as well.

I recall the UAE birds sported a different style that didn't (outwardly) appear to have any gimbal action to them but I would think the one in Ned's shot could be FOD'd quite easily if the front element were not caged.

But I'm probably wrong...
