When the A-10s go out in pairs, is a instructor in the second plane? When two A-10s are at the range is one of the planes doing the bombing and strafing an instructor?

I know there is always a student and an instructor pilot. I would assume that the instructor would show the student how to do the manuver and then the student performs the manuver going lower in altitude each time they pass/meet their goal. It could also be two instructor pilots, one more experienced IP will upgrade the other.

Do they eventually turn students loose to visit the range on their own?

No the student's totally depend on the IP. They are always under the IP's care. Once the student graduates they either become an IP in a training unit or get sent to a gaurd/reserve/active duty combat coded unit.
