Thanks Joe! The high clouds really made that one, providing a sullen steely sky. Something you'd expect to see in WWII Europe.  Jay's very nice "Welker-ised" Mustang prompted me to post the Valle shot.

Still a sucker for that exhaust discoloration.  Note the four engines on the C-47, too.

Vignetting still looks pretty heavy at this resolution (carrying over our conversation from Facebook), but the cracks and scratches look even better here.  If you look at a lot of the photos in museums, they're typically pretty flat in terms of contrast, and with a bit of an ambered/sepia look.

Consider This:

The average life of an airframe in WWII was 100 Hours

Given this statistic, wouldn't the aircraft in 1944 look shiny and new?

I don't know about that.  If you've ever poked your eyes into Mustang magazine and scanned the photos of Mustangs in the field, they look pretty wheather beaten and tarnished although I'm sure there were several new ones in every squadron replacing lost and war weary mounts.  FYI, Mustang magazine might be an excellent reference for your aging experiments/practice.
