No kidding, that could have ended a hundred different ways and most of them involved a mop and a bucket.

Several earlier versions of this scenario didn't end so well.  Back in the 70s two P-3s embedded themselves in mountains near Sigonella.  Those incidents caused a major change in the P-3s NATOPS manual for simulating and/or responding to such failures.
