Lens "reach" for airshows

Planning waaaaaayy ahead here obviously, but I was just wondering for airshows (I'm thinking Luke and Yuma, mainly) as to what the "best" focal length is. The largest lens I have is a Canon EF 75-300mm (the one without IS). Will that do it, or do I need something larger than that?

Depends on the kinda of images you are looking to create.

In your face, close ups of flying aircraft you will want 400mm and up on a crop sensor.  A 100-400mm is a good lens for this.  A Sigma or Tamron 150-600mm is an option.

75-300mm on a crop sensor will work well when wanting to show a bit more context around a subject.

For statics a 24mm-105mm works well.

Consider renting a lens or two for a test drive before you buy anything.  I use LensRentals.com. Prices are competitive and you can get insurance for the rental.  Very important if you are renting a high dollar lens or camera not to be on the hook for the entire retail price of the item if there is a theft or damage.
