I saw a story on NBC that compared the botched maneuver with the normal one and the two that broke were actually the ones that did it correctly. In the normal maneuver, all four jets break in different directions.

The report also said that they came within 130 feet of the ground, and the minimum for that maneuver is supposed to be 500 feet.
