I took out the new 7D today to the drags. I get home and import my pics into a new Aperture library. The thumbnails all look fine. I click on one and get the error "Unsupported file type". I look at the images in Finder on the card and they are all CR2 files. After attempting the open any of them in Aperture, the icon goes black (image no longer shown) and there's an icon in the blackness with an exclamation point and the message "Unsupported image format".

Any ideas? The card is full of CR2 files. Aperture doesn't seem to like them.

OK, I tossed one of my known good cards into the new camera, took a couple shots and I'm experiencing the same problem when trying to import/view the pics.

Possible camera setting?

I'm positive it's the camera. I tested my 5D Mk3 and it works just fine under the same scenario mentioned above.

Time to do the Google.  ;D

I'm really enjoying this thread/conversation with myself.  ;D

Looks like I need to upgrade Aperture 3.0 to get support for the CR2 image format on the new 7D. Sounds odd, but OK. The internet told me, so it must be true.

In order to upgrade Aperture, I need to be running the latest OS. So that's another thing. Oye. ???

And I can't use Lightroom either, until I upgrade.

Sounds like you hit on the solution for Aperture...

As for LR, you probably need the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw which may force you into the CC version if you aren't already there.

If a software upgrade isn't feasible at the moment, you can always convert the .CR2 files to .DNG using Adobe's free DNG converter: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=6019.

Thanks guys. I really wanted to hit the Indy Cars today, but I may use the time to get this upgrade done instead.

Got the OS X upgrade done. Now I can't open Aperture due to it needing to be upgraded. Apple app store does not have the upgrade. BAHHH!  >:(

I may just install Lightroom and walk away from everything I've shot in the past. This stuff should not be such a pain in the ass.

Why can't you bring all your old images into Lightroom?

I can, and that may be the final answer. I just wasn't ready to give up Aperture  yet. But baptism buy fire is a good way to learn something new.

The good news is that if it's on a hard drive it can be found by Lightroom...

LR will, however, make you question (and tighten up) your file management.

I'm pretty good at file management, thanks to the Aperture method. I break out each event into a unique library with three exceptions.....Miscelaneous Aviation, Miscelaneous Cars/Motorcycles, and Miscelaneous (General). I also clean up things after a while. Recently I deleted a handful of libraries that I have already pulled any pics from that are worth looking at, and uploaded them to my Smugmug account. There's nothing so important that I worry about a system crash and losing them.

So I keep a clean house. I'll just adapt to whatever Lightroom does and I'm sure I'll be fine.
