Why was N (NC) chosen as prefix for U S aircraft registration?

I'm not sure why in the United States we use the prefix: "N", but, from what I understand, the prefix is simply a country code.

Every country has their own prefix (EX- Canada: "C", Germany "D", etc...).

It comes from having the attitude, the ethics, and the discipline to do the right thing — every time, all the time, regardless of who's watching."
