Just out of curiosity, when the mains retract on the bigger airliners do they apply braking to the tires thus accounting for the (suspected) brake dust in this shot???

James,

I do believe that is correct, brakes are applied prior to retraction.  I don't think they want spinning tires inside the wheel well, so close to hydraulic lines and such.

I love this photo nicely done. I am interested in knowing what aircraft is that silver one with the red lettering. It's next the engine.

Just a quick cell phone snap because I couldn't pass up the beautiful evening light... FX 783 from Lubbock, TX, being offloaded in the remote gates because it's usual parking spot was being used by one of FX's new 767s.
