During Fifi's visit, waiting for the 'ol warbirds to fire up and taxi, spent some time grabbing these shots.
Does the Piper look like it's missing some portion of its tail feathers?
The helo departure was pretty cool to watch. Just about went straight over our heads.
Here's the wind-up....
... and the follow through.
This poor guy spent about 15 minutes (with few breaks spread throughout) trying to hand prop this plane.
Dave,
Got a closeup of the nose art on that Champ?
Here's a couple from when I was waiting around for Fifi.

Kind of an odd looking airplane. This is a modification of the Partenavia P.68 called the Observer (for obvious reasons). It belongs to the Department of the Interior and was identified as "Interior 35" on the radio.

This is Piper Malibu N727MC taking off from DVT yesterday (1/9/11) on what turned out to be its last flight. It crashed in the Colorado mountains while enroute to Pueblo, CO with two reported fatalities. R.I.P.

Thanks. I haven't either. I was surprised to discover that there are 40 of them on the US register. I don't know how many of those are flyable though.

Great series Chris. I especially like your Precious Metal image - well done.
Thanks.
It's hard to see, but PM has "Powered by Atlantic Aviation - DVT" on the right side just behind the cockpit.
This is obviously a really bad photo, but I was wondering if anybody had ever seen one of these. It's a PZL-104 Wilga. It's parked on the north ramp at DVT.
I think this is N191TS, which the FAA says is "Sale reported" to someone in Phoenix, so we might see it at one of the fly-ins one of these days.
There was one at AirVenture this year.
Strange looking bird.

Three-time Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser parks his nicely painted Aerostar on a dark day. Appropriately enough, he had to fly a few race tracks in the sky before he could land due to the weather. The ceiling was about 900 feet when he came in.

I'll give the paint job an "interesting" vote, but I'm not sure I'd give a "nice" vote for Mr. Unser's paint scheme though. Of course, I'm not going to complain... it's his choice and his money... let the warbird anoraks fight out the paint scheme argument. ;D

I was trying to place where I remembered that tail number from... and that's the Pitts that belongs to Gunther Eichhorn. He may not be known to many folks these days, but he and his website Landings.com, began wayyyy back in 1994 and was one of the first real aviation websites around the dawn of the WWW. Unfortunately it never really evolved from the Web 1.0 era and is pretty sad looking these days... but I remember it was my starting homepage on Netscape Navigator running on my Packard Bell Pentium desktop connecting to my local dial-up BBS (with a Winsock WWW connection) via a 28.8 modem... it's amazing how far we've come!!

I had not seen this L-39 before. It came out of the northwest industrial park, so it could be affiliated with the L-29 that is also over there.

Way to go Chris terrific catches.
I think it's interesting that the top CH-46 has the extreme rear of the fuselage painted black. You can see why when you look at the other two. The engine exhaust has made them look very dirty. The black paint hides it.
Another thing that was interesting was when they were getting ready to leave, after the engines on all three aircraft were started and warmed up, the rotors on all three started turning at exactly the same time. Somebody must have given a signal.
APSoCal had shots of what I assume were these same birds over in Cali supporting a VP visit. I'm sure most of their operations are very, very well coordinated.

UPDATE: Their Facebook page says they maydayed out of the gold race due to one of the gear doors blowing off. Wasn't fixed until Thursday. They arrived at DVT yesterday.

Here are a few more of Precious Metal. She was over at Atlantic Aviation. Thom had flown in there the night before from Reno as part of his trip back to Florida. I got a chance to talk with him quite a bit and even helped push the P-51 out of the hangar so it could get refueled

No I don't think Dean has been down there but maybe I can talk him into a flight there before it warms back up. he is based there at DVT and has a hangar on the South West side just a couple rows away from the CAP office.

I love the paint scheme. It is owned by Allied Wings Limited Partnership operates the Canada Wings Aviation Training Centre located at Portage la Prairie Southport Airport in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada.
I also read that it is operated by the Canadian Forces Air Force (formerly RCAF) and is painted to commemorates Avro Lancaster VR-R 'R for Ropey.' On the left side it has 'Ropey' and a lot of bomb symbols painted on it.

If I understand correctly, you should only have to drive over the mountain to see it on Saturday, as they're doing a mass formation flight to Sedona.

Yes, but I don't know any good spots to Sedona, and historically I've only seen backlit spots around the airport. And even though it would be cooler to see them there, takes me the same amount of time to drive to DVT (Even though Sedona is a lot closer in distance). But I might have to double check this one.

Great shot Chris. I was over at Dean's hangar having a beverage and heard it take off. We ran out of the hangar to watch it pull straight up. Not sure what it leveled out at. Had to be over 5000'msl. Awesome sound and sight for sure. We drove over to it on the ramp and I have a few pics of it there while they were fueling it up but nothing too good because of all the people around it.
Cheers,
Chris
Awesome shot!. I was driving on Deer Valley Rd when I saw it by the end of the runway, but I figured that if it was taking off I didn't have enough time to go to the deck, so just continued driving and rolled my windows down. I heard it, and I saw it doing that vertical climb that F-18 pilots seem to love.
Thanks. I wonder if they got any noise complaints. It was pretty loud, and people aren't used to aircraft like that out there. Not like at Gateway where they are there frequently.

Here's one you don't see every day. It's a Rutan VariViggen. It was Burt Rutan's first full size aircraft, based partly on the Saab Viggen. He supposedly sold 600 sets of plans but only about 20 were built. Wikipedia says there are "fewer than five" still flying.

A pretty cool plane. It's a homebuilt replica of the XF9C-1 prototype for the Curtiss F9C-3 Sparrowhawk. That was a "parasite" fighter that was carried on the US Navy airships back in the 1930's. It could be launched and recovered in the air using a trapeze-like device.
It flew in with a couple of Stearmans and a Waco, all regulars at the local fly-ins, and it's registered in Chandler, so maybe we'll see it on the fly-in circuit.
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7292/9741087529_b480cd9ca2_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrisk48/9741087529/)
CORRECTION: Turns out this is not a replica XF9C-1. I assumed it was since it says XF9-1 on the tail. I looked at some pictures of the Sparrowhawk and this is quite different. It actually looks more like an XF11C. I guess I'll have to talk to the pilot the next time I see it and ask him.

Wow, a PT6 powered Lancair! No wonder it goes 354 mph!
The record was set in 2002 and still stands. It's speed over a 3 kilometer course for aircraft with takeoff weight of 1000 to 1750 kg and a turboprop engine.
Interestingly, the record for the same weight and distance with an internal combustion engine is actually faster (373.93 mph). That was set by a Thunder Mustang with a Falconer V-12 engine in 2005.
Very cool Twin Otter taking off. Viking is the company that builds new ones now, although this appears to be a conversion, since it's registered as a 1975 DHC-6. Came out of the Honeywell hangar and returned later and went back there.

The McDonnell 220 was stored at Deer Valley for many years, seemed like most of my childhood. Here's a shot taken in 1969 with a Kodak Instamatic (126 film). Many years later (1982) I photographed it in Albuquerque. At that time it was bare aluminum being readied for paint. I think it might be in El Paso now.

I love that rework, Matt. Really great effort. Looks older than 2009!

Lousy photo, but this arrived at DVT this morning. I think it's an Iskra in Polish Air Force markings.
Oh wow, would love to see one flying locally.
Unfortunately, I just found out that the truck towing the Iskra was preparing to leave the airport when I saw it. No word on where it was going. I had no idea it was out there. Must have been hidden away in a hangar.

Thanks Harvey, that was a 6-second exposure. I also got lucky when an aircraft taxied behind it while taking this shot.

Felt good to get out and take pictures of airplanes again.
A flight of four D model hornets decided to stop by Deer Valley so got to see them departing for Palm Springs.
