Joe  This looks like it might be a MH-60G Pave Hawk (Special Mission) bird.  You don't see these babies much unless you're at their base or on the wrong end of some serious butt kicking.  Nice capture

Joe, I missed your note.   Was this a Navy bird or Army/Air Force.  It's difficult to see the position and angle of the tail wheel in this photograph.

Pretty confident this bird (90-26225) is an HH-60G.  55th Rescue Squadron based at D-M.

You're probably correct.  I didn't see your note before I posted the MH-60G comment, but I thought that the HH designator was Navy and the MH designator was for Army and Air Force "Special Mission" birds.

Sure was nice to see their SH-3s still flying back in 03/04.  I think they were one of the last stations to retire them.

Keith, Great shots of the Seahawk.  It seems so odd to me to see them in such bright, high viz colors.  It certainly illustrates a relaxation of the air/sea threat to see any warbirds painted in "Here I Am Colors".  These are great shots of a really great Navy workhorse.

Sikorsky/PZL-Mielec S-70i, the Polish-built export variant of the UH-60.  Pretty sure this the first one off the production line, and the only one currently in the US.  (Would have loved to have Canon's new -15mm fisheye zoom for this shot).

For the most part yes. The RF-4Es are actually McD built (the RF-4EJs are Japanese built RF-4E models converted to recon via belly pods). The factory that makes the F-15 engines is actually right next to the base here at Yokota. Transfer of technology is a big part of the JSDF manufacturing process it seems.

The Navy H-60's at Deer Valley are a mixture of two types.

They are from Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Five (HS-5), Nightdippers, on the U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower, which is home-ported in Norfolk.

A shot from today's HS-5 departure from DVT. This is the CO's bird, but based on the five stars on the rear fuselage, it may also have been used to fly an admiral around.

I spoke with a woman whose son is one of the pilots and she said they were just overnighting on the way to NAS Fallon for training. They train there because the terrain is similar to Afghanistan.

The helicopters taxied on their wheels to a point near the west end of the runway and took off from there. I hadn't seen H-60s taxiing before and noticed that they can't turn very sharply on their wheels. If they have to do so, they increase pitch and kind of hop to turn.

If anybody has noticed that the sharpness of my photos has increased, it's probably because I stretched my budget to the limit and bought myself the Canon 100-400 zoom for Christmas. Hey, new tires can wait another six months, right?  They aren't that bad. ;)

Chris, great shot of the colorful H-60.  The others are good too but the paint job is very cool on "610"

I really like the new lens, although it's taking some getting used to. I keep finding myself putting my hand on the focus ring to hold up the front when it's zoomed all the way out, which doesn't help the auto focus function. It's also a lot bigger and heavier than what I am used to (55-250 kit lens). I guess I'll have to start working out.  :D

I was standing next to the tower, but I went with my friend who is a Knighthawk pilot with HSC-3.  I don't know where to go to photograph from outside the fence.

A Hawk with long legs and a camera?? just ever so slightly more powerful than my 100-400! This blackhawk has been doing some night time high altitude work or testing, note the flight crew wearing the white O2 masks. It's been interesting to watch this bird land and taxi with the nose so much higher than a standard hawk.

I suppose if they were worried about someone seeing that contraption they'd flying out of Ft. Huachuca. certainly a bit larger than the average sensor turret. Can only imagine what they can see with that baby.

I was a bit hesitant at first to take a few pics, Its been at the Million Air hangar right next to my hangar for the last three weeks or so. The other day I walked by the open hangar and several access panels on the hawk were opened up exposing a lot of internal equipment and no one was around it, so I figured there can't be a lot of concern for secret stuff. However, the camera did have an aluminum foil type enclosure around it.

I tend to agree with you. I've heard them on the radio when I'm working and they're up at 16,000', not the normal operating altitude for a blackhawk.

I caught this a week or so ago from atop "A" Mountain and I keep coming back to it.  This is one of the Army Guard Blackhawks passing in front of the top of Camelback Mountain.

This was my first attempt at capturing the Papago ANG Blackhawks departing from their nice little nest.  Light faded quicker than I had expected due to the clouds.  High ISO equals a bit more noise than I'd have liked, but what are you gonna do. 

I have been keeping track of departure/return times and average length of sorties.  There will be more attempts.
