Did you see this bird when it was at Williams a little over a month ago? I took some photos of it (certainly not as good as this), and it had a white cargo pack straped into the rear seat. I just wondered if you know what it is for. I've never seen that done before.

Yup, Columbus. The tailband gives it away. Was this recent, or was this the one from last year that was there for well over a month?

Can you imagine traveling back in time and telling all the American pilots that were training at Williams Field during WWII to fly and fight against Nazi Germany that someday, Luftwaffe pilots would be trained by the US Air Force and would fly in and out of that same airfield they were training on? Sorry for the delayed response, missed this when it was originally posted. Intake ribbing is the result of the Propulsion Modernization Program, which involves modifying the intakes and exhausts of T-38Cs. There are only a handful of C-models that haven't been PMPed-out, and none of the As (Beale, Holloman, Whiteman) are getting the mod. Last I heard, these birds weren't being repainted until they went in for major maintenance (I don't know the precise lingo).
I believe the engines are the same J85s, they're just being modified.
Is it a duct shape change or simply some reinforcement?
Duct shape change. Go through your T-38 shots and look at the Beale/Whiteman/Holloman birds (all As) then compare that with the intakes on most of the CB/EN/RA/VN (mostly C) birds. The PMP-ed C-models have noticeably wider intakes. They also have the vented exhausts, as opposed to the straight-nozzled exhausts on As and non-PMP Cs.
There's some information about the PMP here.

Based upon the recent information from Joe and Chris Kennedy - I'd say no. This Talon has not undergone the "Propulsion Modernization". I don't see the "vented" exhausts or wider intakes. To me, the intakes seem to have the angle forward found on the non-modernized models. Let's see if Joe or Chris agrees.

Thanks for the kind words Joe. While it is not a true HDR image, it has many of the same attributes. I got lucky with the light popping through the clouds at the right moment. Good light makes all the difference IMHO. I think sometimes we become so used to the glaring light and cloudless skies we typically have in AZ that we forget what good light can do for an image. Lately I've really been studying the art of making proper exposures in the camera. Jay has really mastered proper exposure - just look at his recent images for Osh. I've got a lot to learn; however, once in a while the gears mess in my brain pan and I get things to work.

I was fortunate the sky was overcast, helps to subdue the reflections on the paint.

Great shot Harvey. These black T-38s are not easy to shoot. Mine always look like crinkled up tin cans. This one looks like it came out of a mold by comparison. Perhaps the HO refers to the scale!
A little faux T/S effect and it would look "HO" ;D
It really would. It's amazing how effective than can be.
The new T/S Blur in CS6 is fun to play with...

It's one of the 586th FLTS birds out of Holloman. They have a few T-38s with all sorts of non-standard pylons and probes and such.
Cool shot, Ned. Haven't seen one in that scheme yet.

Really nice image Jay! Those black T-38s are tough to shoot. The clouds really work well.

Agreed, Beale, Holloman, and Whiteman -38s are all total glare monsters. Some of the few aircraft best shot on cloudy days.
Thanks Gents.
I agree. Absence of light can be an ally in such cases.

Great shots on the T38 Bill, those black birds are beautiful but difficult to shoot because of how shiny they are, so much reflection. You nailed both, great work!
Thanks very much, Harvey
