Very cool shot Joe, maybe they could patrol I-10 with this to lure the idiot shooter out in the open, and then eliminate the problem.

Thanks Harvey.  The freeway shooter case is certainly spooky.  The cops could certainly use some help from the Marines, who have extensive counter-sniper experience from Iraq and Afghanistan, that's for sure.

The HIMARS rocket artillery system is mindblowing.  With the push of a button, you can deliver six 500-lb. warheads on targets up to 190 miles away.

Oh sweet!  You were able to get south of the LZ?
Title: Re: Marine Week 2015
Post by: Tower Guy on September 11, 2015, 04:08:18 PM
I did get on the south side, but I had a relentless stream of visitors. I was challenged by two female Marines that jogged over to see who I was and why I was in their restricted area. I showed them my DOD badge and they were satisfied with that. Five minutes later 2 Glendale police on bikes approached me and I gave them the same story. They had me show them DOD, Air Traffic Control Licenses and retired military card. Then they left me there. Ten minutes later a Marine Lt. came over and checked my ID's and said he'd have to take my name and check it against some list. I was hoping the choppers would get there quickly. He left me there? I was hoping to meet more new people and sure enough the Glendale SWAT team guy came over to say Hi!, and check my ID, so I explained that most of the Marines and Glendale Police had done the same. So, he left and left me there. All in all a very good location to shoot from, just to many visitors!

Thanks Matt!  Would've been a much better image if the skids of the Huey were above the wing of the Cobra, but I'll take it.

^^^  Joseph - Your brace of Marine helo photographs from downtown are a wonderful deviation from the norm. The "big city" backgrounds help create a totally different "feel". It's not often you see these flying tools of war juxtaposed with the graphical lines and textures of modern high-rise buildings. Imagery you typically only see in Hollywood productions. Well done sir.

Thanks Jeff.  Catching these birds operating downtown was my main goal during Marine Week.  Glad I went back with my son on Sunday morning, as that's when I got the heads-up they were leaving that evening instead of on Monday morning.  Kind of gambled on the location, but had I stayed north of Jefferson and shot from the balcony above Tilted Kilt, I would have gotten maybe 3 or 4 shots before it was all belly, and I wouldn't have gotten the aircraft against any skyscrapers, as the tallest building in the background when looking south is a six-story brownstone.  Plus, though it was backlit from where I was, the light was consistent, so I didn't have shots where the nose is in the shadow of a building, but the tail is lit up brightly by the sun.  Oh, and having talked to the Huey pilots that morning, they knew I was going to be at the garage, and that's the side of the aircraft they put the American flag on.  Nobody on the north side got that shot.  Lots of compromises, but I think I made the right call.

Thanks Matt!  I prioritized this because Marine stuff hits Willie all the time, and we already have opportunities to see a MAGTF-esque operation at Kiwanis in Yuma that is way better for photography than what went on at UOP Stadium.  Figured this was the one really unique op of the weekend, was pretty surprised there weren't more shooters out there.

Solid Osprey shots, glad you could at least make it out to Willie.

Beautiful light, great capture Joe. I have a friend in the tower at Gateway now, he's in the process of getting rated. I hope he makes it, I've never been in that tower. Reference the lighting, what would be the best time of day to shoot from the tower, in your opinion. Thanks.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I need to know how many V-22s participated in Marine Week.  Pretty sure it was three, but just need someone to confirm that.  Anyone still have their shots from that week who can confirm that?  Thanks!

Just looked through my photos and yes, there was three Osprey's present.
