Another set of HMX-1 birds. Awesome. These guys used to make the windows of our building rattle at the Naval Research Lab when they were making their speed runs up the Potomac from MCAS Quantico. I shot (photographed - gotta be careful how I word that) a HMX-1 CH-46E last week, but it was too far away to get a reasonably clear shot.

"In case you didn't notice there's a 40,000 pound, 8,000 horsepower, flying monster behind that tree over there on the left."
Joe, what a great shot! Your Sigma (I'm assuming) serves you well.
Thanks Scott. Cheap-o Canon 75-300 (the ancient, non-IS version) on my XTi, actually.
I actually hated this shot when I took it. This was the last -53D that came in during the daylight, and I wanted to make sure I got solid shots of it departing since I was pretty sure it was the last opportunity I'd have to shoot one. I figured it was going to depart on the same azimuth it came in on, so I walked a ways down to get set up for a mostly side-on shot of it in that low-angle golden-hour light with minimal shadow on the airframe. The tree obstructed my view of it on the ground, but I was fine with that, since it was supposed to (in my mind, at least) go straight out. Instead, it turned right immediately after lifting off and headed right toward me. There were so many people and cars in the parking lot that I couldn't reposition, and even if I could, everything happened too fast.
The actual image has the aircraft more or less "wings"-level. I rotated it fairly aggressively to give it the appearance of a nap-of-the-earth, whipping-around-the-trees flight profile. I like the result, but I'm still kicking myself a bit over missing the shot I wanted. Lemonade from a lemon, I guess.

CH-53E - Low and Slow
Beautiful shot. I've always loved blue-water ops shots where the sea and the sky just seem to merge with no defined horizon. Such a good backdrop.
Thanks Joe! The beauty of it is that two-thirds of the world's surface is covered with it! Another thought relative to helicopter photos is that for static shots I've never been too concerned about getting the whole rotor in the photo. With this series I had a clear preference for the frames that included the entire rotor. Glad I thought to back out the zoom for some. It's easy to get fixated on a certain crop and to just keep shooting that same shot. There is a place for the tighter crops but I'm glad I got both.
