CAL FIRE OV-10A seen here departing Fox Field, Lancaster, CA.
CAL FIRE currently operates a fleet of 13 OV-10 aircraft. CAL FIRE uses the OV-10As as command and control of aircraft on wildland fires. The crew provides tactical coordination with the incident commander on the ground, providing information on the movement and spread of the fire. The OV-10A crew then directs CAL FIRE's airtanker and helicopter pilots on where to make their retardant and water drops.
Wow, great looking bird!

The location wasn't so good with the powerlines and houses in the background, but you take what your dealt.
Thanks Joe C. for the info on this event, the location and time. Got a nice free lunch out of it also.

I read somewhere that at least one of the companies operating Neptunes as firefighting air tankers, Neptune Aviation Services, would be replacing them with Bombardier Q200's and Q300's.
I wonder if they will go on to another career as warbirds, or if they are too worn out.
Interesting question. No doubt they're well maintained but they've done some very hard flying and carried stuff that's known to get all over everything.
It would take some very deep pockets (I think) to have them torn down, thoroughly cleaned and made safely operable around the public.
The P-3s might be of interest to a foreign government perhaps but I think the Neptunes and Trackers have probably had their last hurrahs.
I think they could totally make it as warbirds I mean isnt the fact that we have as many B-17's flying as we do ,due to the fact that many were once used as firebombers what I think is even more interesting is what will they replace them with ,I have seen the Canadair/Bombardier solution which is strap some bladders around the fuselage of a Dash-8 series aircraft but havent some of the most successfull tankers been ex-maritime patrol planes and if thats the case should we start seeing maybe S-3's converted or I even read the idea of converting A-10's as tankers called "Firehogs" with the ability to scoop water from lakes and such ,now that would be awesome ,the future of aerial firefighting ,747 supertankers and A-10's ;)
A-10s would just use the muzzle blast to blow the fire out.... like Chuck Norris. :o

Probably too many hours on the wings, hard landings, maybe difficulty getting airframes from the Navy.....Navy seems to be a stickler about releasing/selling airframes of any sort.

There was limited tanker activity at the Winslow Tanker Station on Monday and Tuesday. The station was deserted about 11:00 AM on Monday. I returned at 2:30 PM. Aero Union Lockheed P-3A-45 Orion N921AU Tanker 21 had just landed.

The tanker operations that I saw were all off Runway 22. I didn't have time to get around to the west side of the airport before Tanker 21 took off both days. Caliente Drive looks like it has a good view of departures from Runway 22.
I was looking for lost ladders while I was there, but I didn't see any.
Roger that on Caliente, just north of the junkyard. Looked like it would have been perfect, especially in the afternoon.
Not too much of a bummer on the ladders - both were bent and slightly wobbly.

Very nice Matt - well done.
Here's a fine example of some atmospheric contrast:
First shot: taken when the CH-47 (w/ Canadian civilian registration) was landing.
Second shot: taken when the same CH-47 was departing a short time later.
This was up in Madras, OR. Between the landing, and subsequent departure, the winds shifted, resulting in the smoke being blown towards the airport. I'm guessing the Sierra Pacific 737-200 charter out of KIWA is taking crews up to this fire.

Great video. It is almost 7 min long of just the tanker making the 3 drop passes. Not an annoying 30 piece that they showed on the news. Cameraman zooms out on 3rd pass and you can make out the lead plane guiding the tanker in for the drop.

Shot during mine and Dunny's frustrating trip to Winslow and Show Low at the height of the Wallow Fire last summer. P-2s and P-3s had been flying out of Winslow all week long, and the day we went, everything was grounded due to very poor visibility over the fire area. Tanker 7 was the only heavy tanker that we saw in the air that day, and we actually missed the landing because we thought it was landing on the other runway. Had we stayed put, we would have caught touchdown and taxi shots. On top of that, we both left our ladders at Winslow, only realizing this once we were in Show Low. Such a frustrating day.

Thanks guys! I apologize for my absence from the forum. I finally figured out a good workflow for processing and posting images in a more doable time-frame.
Ross, I'm glad to be back and look forward to shooting with you again. I shot the DC-10 from a business park off Oracle Road at the foot of the Catalinas and the others from Catalina State Park. I got lucky when the DC-10 made a steep run down the face of the mountain straight for my position.
