Sentimental Journey rolled off the Douglas assembly line in late 1944, and was accepted by the Army Air Corp on March 13, 1945. Manufactured too late to see service in the European war, the aircraft was assigned to the Pacific theater for the duration of the war. In 1947, the aircraft was removed from storage in Japan and assigned to Clark Field in Manila as a photo-mapping plane. For nearly three years she served in that capacity, flying to all corners of the Pacific in the configuration of a RB-17G.
Sentimental Journey was then transferred to Eglin Field, Florida, and was converted to a DB-17G for service as an air-sea rescue craft. During the 1950's, B-17 serial number 4485314 was converted once again to become a DB-17P, serving with the 3215th Drone Squadron at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. During this time Sentimental Journey participated in "Operation Greenhouse," the fourth postwar atmospheric nuclear weapon test series conducted by the United States during the spring of 1951. This test used unmanned, radio controlled B-17 drone aircraft to measure blast and thermal effects and to collect radioactive cloud samples. During the test, a drone aircraft would be taken off by ground control. A "mother ship," already airborne, would then come from behind, take control of the drone and fly it to the target area. Sentimental Journey served as a mother ship for this nuclear testing. On January 27, 1959, final military orders were cut, transferring the airplane to military storage at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. Within a few months, 85314 was acquired by the Aero Union Corporation of Chico, California, and became a civilian aircraft as N-9323Z, the registration which remains with her to date. For the ensuing eighteen years, an aircraft that had been designed to survive no more than a hundred missions, flew literally thousands of sorties against forest fires throughout the country.
On January 14, 1978, at a membership banquet for the newly formed Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, Colonel Mike Clarke announced the donation of the aircraft to the CAF for assignment to the Arizona Wing.

On Friday, May 15, I flew on Sentimental Journey from Falcon Field (FFZ) to Grand Canyon National Park Airport (GCN), a distance of about 151 miles (total flight time was just over an hour). Not only did I have the experience of flying in Sentimental Journey, but I was invited to sit in the left seat and fly Sentimental Journey. I logged 0.5 hours of B-17G time that day!

That really good lookin' Loadmaster sitting in the nose is really what makes these photos great. ;D
Thanks to everyone for coming out and welcoming us home in style! My days on tour were a lot of fun, but it's great to be back home!
My first air-to-air shoot! My shots didn't come out as good as I had hoped, but it was still a lot of fun taking them.
We were en route from Mojave to Fox Field. A big thanks to Bob "Stambo" Stambovsky with Stambo Aviation for taking me up in his Piper Lance and making this a possibility.
Here's another AzAP exclusive, you will not find this photo posted anywhere else!

A couple more from yesterday's return to FFZ.
Who's that good looking guy in the nose?
I totally fell behind my camera yesterday and really came away empty-handed as far as solid, sharp images of the B-17's low pass goes. This is the best one out my series - looking forward to a re-match.
Was great seeing everyone out there and finally getting a chance to meet Jay and Mitchell.
Very nice images by all who came out!
Since we're documenting this bird, I'll add some Nose Art shots that were actually taken a couple years ago:

Awesome shot, Joe!
She made a visit to Willie today. I was lucky enough to be just getting back to my dorm when she went out on her first touch and go. Did 3 full stops, pulled in for a photo-op at the hill and went on her way.
Would have posed a heads up but it was all happening so fast. :P
Some shots from visits to FFZ yesterday and today.
Did I mention there was a nice little crowd out there today?
That tug is probably too big to clone out, isn't it?
All of these are great, but my favorite is the closeup of the engine with the smoke.
Mitchell,
Thanks. I've been wanting to get some dramatic type shot of an engine start; some prop blur, smoke and such. Still haven't nailed the shot that I've been picturing in my head, but still working on it.
Dave
Okay, Rob inspired me to mess around for this month's challenge. Have some things to work on in order to improve my shots, but figured I'd post a few of my initial attempt(s).

Sentimental Journey & the CAF's B-25, Maid in the Shade, departed late this morning for a cooler weekend in Prescott. If anyone is headed, or needs a reason to head, to Prescott - they'll both be on display.
I thought this was interesting, it's from the June 2010 Arizona Wing NewsLetter:
The Last B-17 to Serve in the Military (B-17 "Sentimental Journey")
Yes. That's right. AZ Wing's B-17 "Sentimental Journey" was the last B-17 to be deactivated by the U.S. military. And, it wasn't as long ago as you would think. It took place in the year 2000.
Part of the requirements for students in the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School was to fly and evaluate a plane that they never flew before. So, back in 2000 two students from the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School were to fly and evaluate a B-17 as their graduation project. The AZ Wing had instructors and a designated pilot examiner who regularly conducted B-17 type rating training and certification for our members. So he submitted our training program and related training materials for review and was awarded a Navy contract to conduct this training.
We could not operate our B-17 as a civilian aircraft for this training because the Navy test pilot students did not hold civilian pilot certificates. Their test pilot program supervisor, a Navy Lt Cmdr, traveling with the students, coordinated returning the B-17 to active duty with personnel at the Pentagon.
So on November 16 and 17, 2000, our "Sentimental Journey" was back on active duty serving in the U.S. Navy. We operated on military flight plans under the call sign of "Navy Fortress One Seven."

Matt, et. al.:
I had a chance to ride in the B17 Sentimental Journey last November 7th. I'll never forget it. I burned 2 rolls of film, but here are 2 photos. Taken with an early 1970's Pentax K-1000. (The Pentax has an internal exposure meter, which is more convenient then the old 1940's &1950's Argus C3's I usually use, which need a hand held meter). The photo of the view out the window is when we flew into a canyon of the Superstitions (!).

Not once she is back in Mesa. She usually does some local stuff flying out of Falcon, and then goes into her heavy maintenance. She is scheduled to be home from tour on Monday, October 18.
Hey all,
Just back from my two week summer tour with Sentimental Journey, the CAF's B-17G. Here are some shots that I managed to grab between crazy busy days training as a flight crew chief (FCC) on Sentimental Journey.
While at my last tour stop, in Dayton, OH, I had the great opportunity to fly on my first air-to-air photo shoot. I rode in a B-25, shooting out the open escape hatch on the right side of the plane. This was a last minute opportunity, and I just used what I had on hand. All are hand held (obviously, duh!) shots, most of which were taken using my non-IS 24-70, f 2.8 lens.
This first shot shows the 'tunnel' to the open tail gunner position in the B-25. You can see SJ taxiing out behind the B-25. The second shot was taken with my IS 100-400. The light was pretty horrible, but I managed to grab this shot of SJ's cockpit crew with some surprising (to me) clarity. If I didn't mention it previously, with the escape hatch open on the B-25, there is a BOAT load of wind buffet inside the plane.
Hey Dave,
Looks like you had a good time, and certainly a great opportunity.
Nice shots.
Bill,
Yes, had a pretty fun time. Also learned a GREAT deal about shooting air-to-air. Would certainly like to do it again, but with a little more opportunity to prepare for it (gear, lighting...).
- Dave
Awesome shots all around. I cant say anything but positives as I have no experience with air to air.
Mitchell,
Thanks!!
Really awesome stuff, looks like you had a lot of fun!
Uneventful arrival back home after cancellation of her tour. Had she come in ten minutes later when FlightAware said she would, this would have been a gorgeously lit shot.

^^^ Very well done Jay. If I did not know better, it would be impossible for me to distinguish this image from a true vintage.
Neat! The Mediterranean is missing from the background behind Vesuvius if he's inbound, or in the forground if he's outbound :o It really does look like a vintage photo. Are the scratches your input, or does the application do that?
Jeff: Thanks...
Vance: I'll work harder on my geography next time! ;D The "aging" is all via a piece of software called Filter Forge 3 which has lots of little adjustment handles for stains, scratches, creases, toning, contrast, etc... I'm just demo-ing it right now.
You know the scary part about this capability is that when you become an expert in this app, no one but another exper will be able to determine "real" from "memorex". Same goes for Photoshop 5. Scary, but neat all the same.
As was pointed out to me elsewhere...
"We spend ungodly amounts of money on the latest equipment simply so we can dull an image down, beat it up and make it look like it was taken 70+ years ago! What will happen when subsequent generations discover images like this and find that photography had hardly advanced at all since the 1940s!"
Pretty good quote IMO... ;D
It is indeed a good quote...and may be more true than we can imagine.
Yep, still sucking images out of that workshop... :-\

Hi all! First post so I figured I'd start with one of my favorite subjects. This is the best of my grabs from yesterday's open house at Falcon. I'm a CAF member and chances are everyone who's been to an event there has seen me around. I was the video guy on the most recent Moose Peterson air to air shoot. I am a full time video producer/editor/shooter and also offer audio and photo services. Aviation is one of my passions though and I'm starting to take documenting it more seriously in photos and videos.
Hope to see you all out and about!
Rob
Pretty impressive for a video grab!
I think we met a while back at the park at Falcon - I was there with my daughter and you were there with your kid(s?). Welcome to the group!
Yup that was me!
And no, this was my 7D with the 70-200 f2.8L II with the 2.0 extender III
It's scaled for posting here.
I wish my video camera could resolve images like this!
Ha! Still impressive.
