Finally caught the camouflage single-seat scooter yesterday. Been waiting since October for another shot at this (missed it back then due to a family obligation).

Joe, thanks for the call and heads-up on this! I am pleased with my first A-4 Skyhawk photo!
Here's another AzAP exclusive photo, you will not find this photo posted anywhere else!
No problem Matt. Saw it enter the pattern and wanted to make sure you were ready.
And for a backlit morning shot, that came out remarkably well.
Thanks, I had to play around with it a bit during editing (conditions weren't the best), but, like I said, "I am pleased with my first A-4 Skyhawk photo!"
Resting at Willie...
Awesome shot Joe. Really shows how much airplane there is forward and aft of the landing gear.
Very nice gentlemen. They always look like they're ready to tip back. :o

Thanks Mitchell... I've got more coming but after I tried this one in B&W, it just begged to be edited and posted first.
Awesome job Jay. Hopefully some day this scooter will fly on a day when I am not thoroughly obligated to be somewhere else.

Wicked shot too.

Is that the Maj Mobile with a coat of paint?
Yes , the McDougall/Douglas TA-4J
You don't often see them that clen. Very nice.
Litterally good as new!
So as I can tell this is the same Skyhawk from Keith's photo above but is it also the same one we have been seeing out of Marana?
http://www.controller.com/listingsdetail/aircraft-for-sale/MCDONNELL-DOUGLAS-TA4J-SKYHAWK/MCDONNELL-DOUGLAS-TA4J-SKYHAWK/1179947.htm
Interesting that it's being brokered through Rockford but yeah, that's the Marana TA-4J.
Guess the $6 Million price initially considered must have been a tad optimistic.
Yeah $6,000,000 was a bit high considering they were asking only asking $5,000,000 (only time I will ever say "only" 5 mil) for those two Su-27's out of Rockford a few months back
N518TA TA-4J Skyhawk in the workshop. Close up this ship is immaculate with a whole bunch of new avionics. There are many brand new parts that have gone to make up this scooter including an unused tailhook. As you wouild imagine this frame is made up from a number of different hulls including A-4L and TA-4J. It really is brand new. A paint job Chip Foose would be proud of. Thanks to Seth and Mike for proudly giving us a close up look of this fantastic bird. It is intentionally being left unmarked FS16440 until a buyer comes along. Hopefully by the time USN Centenary comes along next year it will do the show circuit in full colors. I could think of a few.
The even better news is these guys at Marana have enough parts to put another couple of A4's in the air. Another two seat and a single seat.
It's warming to know that there are real enthusiasts (with time and money) that just love restoring this kind of aircraft.
A-4's are just beautiful. I can only dream of a ride in the back seat.
I guess there are more than enough frames & parts to make up about 10 complete aircraft sitting outside in the sun along with various other bits & pieces including F-8's, S-2F nose and a helo section I can't quite recognize.
Wow, he's actually got one of those air-transportable start carts. Very cool.
Lovely sight to see blasting down the runway at Marana.

A few shots from the first flight of the day.

It was a cool opportunity. Good to see a restoration like that happen, to keep some history flying.
Here's one more, with the A-4 about to head across the big nuclear fusion ball in the sky.
This is not a great photo, since there were so many people around and it is a scan from an old slide, but here is a shot of a TA-4E. This was taken at an air show at NAS Patuxent River in 1967. This is apparently one of two A-4E's that were converted to two-seaters as prototypes for the production models.
Wow! Rare catch if ever there was one. Both of these weren't TA-4Es for long, being redesignated once the TA-4Fs were in production.
Here is another shot from the same show. This is the second prototype XA4D-1 (re-designated A-4A), which is now in the National Naval Aviation Museum. It's marked "Service Test - Naval Air Test Center."

I think it's actually marked TA-4F. The picture isn't clear enough to tell for sure. I used the TA-4E designation because that is how Joe Baugher has this one (152103) listed on his web site.
Yeah, just read a bit further and the two TA-4Es were redesignated in 1966, so this would have been an F when you shot it. Still, one of two ain't bad, regardless of whatever is stenciled on the tail.
Now this is how you ride off into the sunset....

Jay/Ned, Great shots of the A-4B. I didn't know any B models were still flying. Great paint scheme too.
was that N models shot @ Falcon field?
Yup.
I believe it's an A4D-2N which is an A-4C. Nose is a little pointier than an A-4B (A4D-2). Gorgeous aircraft and photos. One of my favorites.
Scott
No idea if it flew in or was trucked in to be painted. Hoping it flies out.
Speaking of Skyhawks, here's a VA-146 A-4C that I was commissioned to paint (airbrush) for a co-worker at Garrett during the 80's. His name was Hugh Magee and he had been shot down in this aircraft off of the coast of North Vietnam. Quite an interesting story. There are some accounts of the event on the net.
Was this the same shoot-down you were telling me about years ago with the guy almost getting hit by another aircraft while descending in his 'chute? Outstanding work on the painting, btw.
Joe, yes that's the one.
His flight had been diverted to help rescue an A-6 crew that was in the water just off the N. Vietnamese coast. As he was coming off the target he got hit behind the cockpit by AAA. HIs A-4 was on fire and he had to eject. As he was descending in his chute, two Skyhawks from another squadron flew past, one on each side of him. He gave me a cassette tape with about 45 minutes of radio transmissions and you can hear the wingman asking if the lead pilot sees the chute but there is no answer. He asks again, same thing. Then he says did you see the chute go by!
Unfortunately one of the A-6 crew was killed by mortar fire from the beach. The other A-6 crew member was rescued as was Hugh.

A quick sketch I did 15-20 years ago of a Skyhawk.

Not the greatest shot, but nice to see (and hear) A-4's still flying!! My dad flew them for 17 years in the Marine Corps!

Oh hell yeah!
Those A-4Ks Draken got from New Zealand are super-sexy. Years ago it was rumored that they were all going to be coming to Willie, but that plan got jacked up and Draken scooped them and the RNZAF's MB.339s as well. Good to see them in Yuma though.

All three scooter shoots are terrific Scott. But #3 just knocks my socks off. Excellent, Excellent.
Thank you very much Jeff. I was surprised to see them there. Two single-seaters and the TA-4. Was also lucky to get them taxiing out. The only other times I saw them they were tied down and plugged up. Had to shoot quickly as they were already running when I got there.
You can never have too many Skyhawks
The Skyhawk is one of the best subjects for a low-angle front-quarter shot. Just frames so well. My favorite of the bunch so far!
Thanks Joe! Ed Heinemann and his team got it right.

Damn right they did. Heinemann is hands-down my favorite designer. So many of the US military's workhorses came from his shop. It's something we kind of take for granted now with the F-16, F-15, A-10 etc having served as long as they have, but back then it was pretty remarkable to have tactical aircraft that served in Korea or WWII still in frontline US service in Vietnam as late as 1972. Pretty sure Heinemann is the only designer who has that honor for three tactical designs (A-1, A-26, and F3D/F-10).
