Post by: jslugman on December 04, 2011, 07:59:43 AM
Quick stop on the way back from Chino. Worth the morning for sure.

James,  these are great shots, but that one ugly Viper.  It looks like the Palm Springs Elementry School 1st Grade did the paint job.  Wow :-)

I wonder what's going to happen to that place in the future. Bob Pond's heirs are selling off his collection, aircraft by aircraft, and those were the majority of the collection. It's possible there is some agreement in place for the new owners to keep them there, but I don't know.

I sure hope so.  I've always wanted to stop there and never did.  I will have to make the trip in the new year if the collection remains there.

All the aircraft out front are in pretty bad shape but the Viper is butt ugly. Almost like they used a latex paint but didn't get the surface clean beforehand.

The collection is simply incredible and definitely worth the time to visit.

Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina
Patrol Squadron SIXTY ONE (VP-61)

This Catalina was the 1,788th PBY-5A manufactured in San Diego and is BuNo 48426, her history is with the US Navy's Patrol Squadron SIXTY ONE (VP-61), Fleet Air Wing 6, and she was flying out of the Aleutian Islands during WWII.

Well, my Navy EA-6B photography has come full circle. My first photo of a Navy EA-6B was of a VAQ-134 bird at Red Flag back in 2009, and now with what is most likely my last Navy EA-6B photograph it is also of a VAQ-134 bird. This one is actually extra special, this aircraft has my friend's name painted on the canopy rail.

Nice images Kaspar. Both Joe and I discussed making a visit on our way home from the March Field Air Museum. In the end, we were both too tired   ;)
