I could not help but notice the difference in the engine exhaust system between the two Apaches. Could some one explain what the role of the deflectors are. Are they incorporated so that the exhaust mixes with the rotor downwash so that it is cooler, resulting in a relatively lower IR signature?
Yup, IR Suppression...
For what it's worth, this is the first time I've seen this mod as well. The flight crew in both birds were civilians from Boeing, so my hunch is that they're testing a new bolt-on IR-suppression kit.
I'm not sure it is that easy to see; however, the heat/IR signature below the tail boom in the first Apache appears to be more evident that in the second bird with the different exhaust system. I apologize for the different angles but the first Apache dusted off the second and I had to wait for it to clear the dirt cloud.

There might be some mixing but I'd hazard a guess that it's to shield the exhaust from the lower-rear aspect and some ner-do-well with a MANPAD
WHAT U LOOKIN AT? - I've been on an Apache jag lately - they're just too cool.

Nice pictures Jeff. They seem to answer the question of the role played by the upturned exhaust deflectors. The rotor downwash seems to disperse the hot exhaust gases more thoroughly and onto a wider area, thereby reducing the possibility of a lock-on by any MANPAD's (as mentioned by James). This would be a good mod especially for the Apache's with uprated engines (hotter exhaust), if any. Thanks
I wonder what (if any) effect it has blowing the exhaust air up into the rotors flight-wise.
My gut tells me that while it may not hurt, it can't help.
The exhaust gases are thinner (in terms of air density) which has to impact lift to some degree.

Glenn, both of your British Army Apache shots are truly awesome!
I had just arrived at the hay stacks at NAF El Centro when I heard a "different" sounding swing-wing approaching. I stopped the truck, grabbed the camera and started shooting. Of course I was not set up yet so the awesome head-on shots that should have happened did not. I glanced down at the camera, made a few quick adjustments - like switching from attempted afterburner settings from the night before to daytime rotary wing settings and got this... I had heard this "Werewolf" around Yuma a couple times but was always at the other end of the field. My first ever (usable) H-64 image.

The old Cochise ramp is one of the few places at Tucson where ground shots can be had without a bunch of buildings and other aircraft in the background. There were a few of these including one longbow and a Chinook further down by the tower. Not to fond of posting I-phone pics but this I think turned out ok.

Very cool shot Joe, where did you shoot this from? When I worked on the ranges at Gila Bend, we would find these casings all over the TAC ranges.
Thanks Harvey. This was out at Range 3, the one on the east side of the 85. I went out there with a Brit Apache pilot who was trained as a range officer. They do this because there are some differences in the terminology used by Brit and US range controllers ('Cleared Green' vs 'Cleared Hot') being one example, and with these being student pilots, it's just easier for the Brit instructors to pull double-duty as range officers than to have the students learn an entirely new vocabulary, especially when live ordnance is involved.
I thought going out to the range for this article would have yielded some great shots, with Apaches hovering close to the tower and engaging the 'rag' targets with the 30mm. Instead, it was A LOT of watching a very distant Apache engaging a tactical target that was even further away. The only time they came close was on the one offset-while-moving gun pass they made as part of their first live-fire serial. It gave me something to tell the story, so it wasn't a total waste of a trip, but it was certainly different than I thought it would be.
